Chapter 14

Consequences came without spectacle.

Dominic lost every command channel.

Celia lost access to family residences, children, and succession discussions.

Victor lost his crews and council seat.

He did not argue.

That mattered.

Dana lost private kitchen access but remained under family protection until her brother’s situation was stabilized away from Victor’s leverage.

No one disappeared.

No one went hungry.

No one had to be humiliated to prove I still ran Ferraro.

Dominic hated that most.

“You think mercy makes you different.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

“Then what?”

“Precision.”

He frowned.

“You tried to remove me.”

“Yes.”

“You tried to use Ruby.”

Silence.

“You lose access.”

I stepped closer.

“I don’t need to make you crawl to prove I won.”

His face changed.

That was the language he understood.

Not because I threatened him.

Because I refused to become the kind of winner he respected.

Celia asked to see Ruby before leaving.

I said no.

She looked offended.

“She’s family.”

“So am I.”

“That’s different.”

“No.”

I held her gaze.

“That belief is why you’re leaving.”

Victor remained after everyone else.

He stood in the breakfast room beside Milo.

The bird watched him.

Victor watched back.

“Little bastard.”

Milo clicked his beak.

Then, in Victor’s own voice:

“Burn the bottle.”

Victor closed his eyes.

I almost smiled.

“Looks like he remembers.”

“Apparently.”

He looked at me.

“What happens now?”

“You live with what you did.”

He nodded.

“And us?”

I looked at him for a long moment.

“I don’t know.”

That answer hurt him.

Good.

Not because I wanted pain.

Because he wanted immediate structure.

Enemy.

Brother.

Forgiven.

Banished.

Anything definite.

Real consequences are often less tidy.

“You don’t get the answer today.”

He nodded again.

Then Milo spoke in Ruby’s voice.

“Uncle Victor.”

Victor looked at the bird.

Milo added:

“Want?”

The toast.

May you like

Victor’s face crumpled.

He walked out without another word.
