Chapter 3

The cinematic, bright sunlight pouring through the windows illuminated the precise moment Thomas Reed crossed the point of no return. His face, usually handsome and kind, hardened into a mask of pure, unadulterated wrath.
Thomas moved with terrifying, fluid speed. He gently but firmly pushed Rebecca behind his leg, reaching down to quickly and quietly remove the coarse, oversized apron from around her delicate neck. He tossed the degrading fabric onto the floor like a piece of infected trash.
"Daddy?" Jacob whispered, looking up with wide, terrified eyes.
"Stay behind me, boys," Thomas instructed, his American accent tight and controlled.
He took one massive stride forward, closing the distance to three-year-old Samuel. Thomas reached out and effortlessly took the heavy silver tray from his son’s shaking hands. The crystal glasses filled with dark soda rattled loudly against the metal. Samuel immediately scurried behind his father, clutching his sister’s hand.
Robert stood his ground, his rosy face twisting into a sneer. "What do you think you're doing, Thomas? Put that tray down and—"
Thomas didn't let him finish the sentence. Using the powerful, heavily muscled arms he had built through years of physical labor, Thomas swung the heavy silver tray backward and then hurled it with explosive, catastrophic force straight into Robert’s face.
The impact was deafening. The heavy silver tray struck Robert squarely across the bridge of his nose and cheekbones. The loud, sickening crunch of breaking cartilage echoed through the grand hall. The crystal glasses resting on the tray launched forward like missiles, colliding with Robert’s chest and shoulders before plummeting to the marble floor, where they shattered into hundreds of glittering, razor-sharp pieces. Dark soda splashed violently across Robert’s expensive suit, ruining the pristine fabric in an instant.
"Robert!" Helen screamed, a high-pitched, hysterical shriek that tore through the room.
Robert staggered backward, blood instantly erupting from his nose and streaming down his fair, rosy chin. He threw his hands up, blindly trying to wipe the stinging soda and blood from his eyes, gasping for breath as shock overtook his system.
But Thomas was not finished.
He marched forward, his boots crunching over the shattered crystal. As Robert tried to regain his balance, Thomas planted his foot and kicked the seventy-two-year-old man squarely and brutally in the center of his chest.
The kinetic force of the kick lifted Robert off his feet. He flew backward, arms flailing wildly, and crashed spectacularly into the massive, tiered, brightly colored celebration cake that had been set up on a display table behind him. The table buckled under his weight. Robert collapsed into the wreckage, buried in layers of white frosting, crushed sponge cake, and shattered wooden supports.

Thomas stood over the ruins of his father, his chest heaving, his eyes blazing with a volcanic fury.
"Do you really not know who paid for this party?" Thomas shouted angrily, his voice vibrating with absolute, undeniable authority.
