Chapter 7

The camera shifted to a tight close-up of Beatrice. The cinematic, slightly warm white balance of the lighting caught the fierce, unyielding resolve that had finally replaced the silent suffering in the elderly woman's eyes. She had endured the hushed threats, the rough handling, and the humiliating confiscation of her dignity in silence, terrified of ruining her son's engagement.

But hearing Delphina publicly dismiss her mind as broken, labeling her a senile burden in front of her own family and the syndicate, ignited a sudden, desperate spark of fury in the matriarch's heart. Her memory was perfectly clear. She was not a broken relic; she was the mother of the boss.

Beatrice lifted her chin. She did not look at her son. She looked directly at Delphina.

The older woman’s fair, rosy skin lacked its usual color, but her faded eyes were bright with an unshed, desperate energy. Moisture gathered rapidly along her lower eyelids, shining in the golden candlelight. Her mouth trembled slightly, a violent, involuntary shudder of adrenaline and fear, before she pressed her lips together and became perfectly still.

“I remember you pushing me.”

Beatrice spoke the words. Her voice was quiet, incredibly clear, and deeply wounded. It was not a sharp accusation screamed in anger; it was a devastating, fragile statement of absolute truth that barely disturbed the air, yet echoed like a gunshot across the ivory-paneled walls.

The absolute, terrifying implication of the matriarch's words crashed over the dining hall. Delphina had not just lied about an accident. She had actively, maliciously assaulted the seventy-four-year-old mother of the Mafia boss, breaking her wrist, and then gaslit the entire family into believing the old woman was losing her mind to cover her tracks.

A collective, horrified gasp swept through the seated guests. In the violent, unpredictable world of the American Mafia, violence was a currency, but the physical assault of a boss's mother by a supposed future bride was an act of high treason that demanded an apocalyptic response.

"Did she just say she was pushed?" a senator's wife whispered, her hand flying to her throat in shock.

Across the polished walnut table, Delphina’s fair, rosy skin drained entirely of color. Her eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated panic. She realized the narrative was completely destroyed. The physical evidence was sitting right in front of them, illuminated clearly for the entire commission to hear. She was staring into the abyss.
