Chapter 3

The continuous, muted clatter of silver cutlery against porcelain provided a rhythmic backdrop to the elegant dinner party. The tall ivory candles flickered gently, casting warm reflections across the gilded mirrors and the heavy silk curtains. The luxurious, intimate atmosphere of the dining gallery felt entirely secure to the wealthy guests, but the air immediately surrounding the head of the table was thick with an unspoken, terrifying tension.

Anya approached the space directly to the right of Gareth’s chair, her slender, graceful proportions rigid with an effort to keep her hands perfectly steady. She struggled violently to contain her distress, forcing her breathing to remain even. On the silver tray rested several slices of a beautifully baked cinnamon-and-pear tart. It was not on the hotel’s official menu. It was a cherished, deeply personal family recipe that Beatrice had taught Anya in the quiet sanctuary of the estate's kitchens—a quiet rebellion, and a desperate attempt to soothe the matriarch's nerves after the violent confrontation with Delphina.

"Ah, dessert is finally served," Delphina announced, her voice light and persuasive. She looked at Anya with a thinly veiled glare of absolute disdain. "Please be quick about it, girl. Our guests have been waiting."

"I am sorry for the delay, Miss Crowe," Anya murmured softly, her American accent trembling slightly as she stepped up to the table.

"Are we to be subjected to apologies, or are we to be served?" Gareth asked, his voice cutting through the ambient noise like a scalpel. He did not look at Delphina; his eyes remained fixed on the golden crust of the tart on the tray.

Anya swallowed hard. With meticulous care, she reached out and placed a fine porcelain plate holding a slice of the warm tart directly before the Mafia boss. The rich, spiced scent of baked pears and heavy cinnamon immediately bloomed in the air, rising above the heavy perfume of the white roses.

Beatrice looked down at her own plate as Anya served her next. The elderly woman’s eyes softened, a profound, fragile gratitude washing over her lined features. She looked up at the beautiful housemaid, recognizing the immense risk Anya was taking by serving this specific dessert without Delphina's authorization.

Delphina, oblivious to the significance of the dish, took a delicate sip of her champagne. "It smells adequate," she remarked dismissively. "Though I specifically requested a chocolate soufflé for the engagement celebration."

"Does a menu dictate our tastes, or do our memories guide our palate?" Gareth inquired, picking up his silver dessert fork. The artistic tattoos on his fingers flexed smoothly as he cut a small piece of the tart. He lifted the fork to his mouth, the warm golden light catching the loose strands of hair over his forehead. He took a small bite, the room holding its collective breath as the apex predator sampled his meal.
