Chapter 8

The close-up shifted instantly to Silas. The bright, luminous colors of the dining hall felt like a harsh interrogation spotlight, emphasizing the lethal stillness that overtook the Mafia boss.

Silas remained completely still for a brief beat. His cold, observant eyes lingered on his daughter's frightened face, absorbing the sheer magnitude of the trauma Annie had endured to protect him. The rigid lines of his angular face softened by a fraction of a millimeter toward the girl, a silent promise of absolute, uncompromising protection.

Then, he slowly shifted that gaze.

His eyes moved first, cutting across the gold-rimmed porcelain and the untouched glass of poisoned champagne, locking directly onto Maribel. A slight, predatory turn of his head followed, elevating his posture to its maximum, terrifying height.

His jaw firmed almost imperceptibly, the muscles flexing beneath his neat stubble. His mouth became completely still, settling into a hard, unforgiving line. The warmth vanished entirely from his expression, replaced by the dark, empty void of an executioner.

He held Maribel’s eyes in cold, unwavering silence.

The visual standoff suspended the dining hall in a state of impending doom. Every single guest in the massive, opulent room remained perfectly attentive, facing him, paralyzed by the public unmasking of the future bride. The silence was deafening, ringing in the ears of everyone present. No one dared to breathe, waiting for the apex predator to strike.

The prompt ended on his cold, unwavering stare, leaving the room trapped in a suffocating vacuum of terror.

Maribel felt her knees go weak. The sculpted emerald silk of her gown seemed to offer no armor against his penetrating stare. The fair, rosy flush on her skin had turned to a sickly, translucent white. She realized that arguing against the clear, undeniable logic of the child's lipreading was a losing battle.

"Silas... darling, please," Maribel whispered, her voice a fragile, pathetic breath. "I was forced into it. The Vivaldi family threatened my father. They said they would kill him if I didn't lace the glass. I didn't want to do it."

"Does cowardice excuse the act of handing a man a poisoned cup with a smile?" Silas finally asked, his deep voice slicing through the heavy air.

He did not raise his hand. He did not need to shout. He simply let the question hang in the luminous, golden light of the chandeliers. The confession had spilled from her lips, confirming the conspiracy. The engagement dinner had transformed into a tribunal, and the verdict was already sealed in the cold depths of his perceptive eyes.
