Chapter 5

The camera angle shifted to a tight close-up of Annie. The cinematic, slightly warm white balance of the lighting caught the fierce, unyielding terror in the eight-year-old girl's eyes. She had lived in a world of profound silence her entire life, learning to read the subtle movements of lips and the micro-expressions of the dangerous men who filled her father's home. She had learned to be invisible. But tonight, invisibility was a luxury she could not afford.

Annie looked directly at Silas, her small hands still wrapped around his thick wrist.

Her inner brows lifted helplessly, an expression of profound vulnerability and quiet agony. Moisture gathered rapidly along her lower eyelids, shining in the golden candlelight. Her lower lip trembled as she prepared to speak the words that would inevitably shatter the empire.

She did not use sign language. She knew the entire room was watching, and she needed the absolute, undeniable truth to echo across the ivory wall panels.

“Maribel said you’d die tonight.”

Annie spoke the words softly, but with a crisp, clear American accent that carried devastating clarity. Her fragile voice broke the ringing silence of the room like a shattering crystal glass.

The absolute, terrifying implication of the child's words crashed over the dining hall. The bride-to-be had not just made a casual comment. She had actively, maliciously orchestrated the assassination of the Mafia boss at his own engagement dinner.

A collective, stifled gasp rippled through the gathered relatives and associates. To state that the future matriarch of the syndicate was plotting a murder in plain sight was a horrifying revelation that disturbed even the hardened criminals sitting at the table.

"What did that child just say?" a senior capo whispered, his hand drifting instinctively toward the inside of his tailored jacket.

Across the polished walnut table, Maribel’s fair, rosy skin drained entirely of color. Her eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated panic. She realized the narrative was slipping rapidly from her manicured grasp. The poisoned champagne was sitting inches from Silas's hand, and the physical evidence of her treason was illuminated clearly for the entire commission to see.

She needed to immediately reassert her control and paint the situation as a tragic, confused hallucination of a disabled child. Maribel gripped the edge of the table, her diamond engagement ring flashing violently in the light, as she prepared to lie for her life.

The entire room seemed to hold its breath. The tall candles glowing in the silver candelabras flickered, casting dancing, erratic shadows against the carved marble fireplace. The sheer, psychopathic ambition required to poison a syndicate boss at a crowded banquet was unfathomable to most, but the terror in the little girl's eyes was undeniable. Annie did not flinch, keeping her eyes locked on her father, waiting for him to believe her.
