Chapter 7

Every flat-screen television mounted along the mahogany perimeter of the ballroom suddenly flickered, cutting away from the digital banquet schedule.
The screens displayed a single, live satellite feed.
The camera was positioned high above an industrial shipping terminal—Terminal Four at the Port of Newark. The Haversham family’s primary deep-water logistics hub.
Dozens of black tactical vehicles were idling at the security gates, their headlights cutting through the coastal fog. Heavily armed men in unmarked tactical gear were fanning out across the container yards, systematically surrounding the administrative offices where Roderic’s loyal dockworkers were stationed.
A distorted voice crackled through the ballroom’s overhead audio system, overriding the ambient silence with a low, metallic rasp:
"Good evening, Roderic."
Roderic did not flinch. He lowered his pistol slightly, his cold gray eyes tracking to the nearest wall monitor. "Miller."
"I see your family reception became rather lively," the voice mocked through the speakers. "Kenneth was always a bit too eager. We told him to wait until the dessert course before initiating the broadcast transfer."
"You brought mercenaries to my docks, Miller," Roderic said, his voice level, carrying through the microphone pinned to the head table. "You know what happens to outsiders who step onto the Newark berths."
"They aren't outsiders, Roderic," Miller replied with a chilling, smug chuckle. "Check the uniforms. Those are private federal contractors operating under an emergency seizure warrant issued by the Department of Justice forty minutes ago. The warrant cites the live-streamed evidence of child abuse and human trafficking originating from your private IP address."
A wave of suffocating realization washed over the room.
Delphine gasped, covering her mouth with trembling, bloodstained hands. "Oh God... the stream... the live stream wasn't for money..."
"Of course it wasn't for money, you stupid girl," Kenneth muttered from the table, a venomous smirk returning to his battered face. "It was the probable cause they needed. The stream gave the feds the legal right to execute an emergency raid on every property registered under the Haversham trust without a grand jury hearing."
"By sunrise, Roderic," Miller’s voice continued smoothly over the speakers, "your accounts will be frozen under federal asset forfeiture laws. Your logistics licenses will be revoked. And your little foundling... well, she’ll be placed in a state protective facility under a sealed identity. You won't see her again until she’s eighteen."
Roderic’s knuckles turned white around the grip of his pistol.
The vein along his temple throbbed with a slow, murderous beat, but his breathing remained perfectly controlled.
"You think the federal badge protects you from me, Miller?" Roderic asked, his voice dropping into that terrifying, quiet register that made even Kenneth step back.
"I think thirty federal marshals and four armored transports protect me, Roderic," Miller laughed. "You have ten minutes to surrender to the agents waiting outside the hotel lobby. If you resist, they have shoot-on-sight authorization."
The audio line clicked off with a high-pitched digital whine.
The ballroom plunged into panicked chaos. Guests screamed, knocking over chairs as they scrambled toward the locked service doors, banging their fists against the wood.
"Roderic! Let us out!" Senator Albright wailed, his aristocratic veneer completely gone. "If the feds breach this room, we will all be indicted as co-conspirators!"
Roderic didn't look at the Senator. He looked at Kenneth.
"You sold my docks to federal prosecutors," Roderic said softly.
"I sold your docks to survive!" Kenneth shouted back, backing toward the wall. "The era of the untouchable godfather is dead, Roderic! The corporate syndicate runs this country now! You can't fight the Justice Department!"
May you like
"I don't need to fight them," Roderic replied.
He raised his weapon and shot Kenneth Ross once through the right kneecap.
