Chapter 8

The master suite in the west wing was an impenetrable fortress hidden beneath layers of luxury. The bright video colors of the room—deep mahogany, rich leather, and crisp white linens—were illuminated by soft, cinematic lighting that offered a stark contrast to the impending violence outside. Heavy steel blast shutters had engaged over the windows, sealing them into a quiet, secure bunker.
Angelo parked his wheelchair near the massive oak desk at the center of the room. He watched as Emma gently laid Noah on the expansive bed, pulling a thick down comforter over the sleeping three-year-old. She turned back to Angelo, her hands nervously twisting the fabric of her professional maid apron.
"You should take that off," Angelo suggested quietly, his voice a low, comforting rumble in the large room.
Emma looked down at her uniform. "Sir?"
"You are not a maid tonight, Emma," Angelo stated, his cold eyes softening as he looked at her. "You are under my personal protection. Sit down. Rest."
"I don't know how to rest when people with guns are coming to kill us," Emma admitted, her American accent cracking with a hysterical, breathless laugh. She walked over and sat hesitantly on a leather sofa near his desk. Her fair skin was ghostly pale. "Why are you doing this, Mr. Castellano? Why risk your entire empire for a servant and her child?"
Angelo looked at her, his angular face illuminated by the desk lamp. The charming loose strands of hair fell across his forehead, contrasting with the dark, violent history etched into his eyes.
"Because power without morality... is just tyranny," Angelo answered slowly, the measured pauses returning to his speech. "I built this syndicate... to protect our own. To establish order. Dominic forgot that. He thought power gave him the right to abuse the innocent. If I allow that rot to exist in my own house, then everything I have bled for is entirely worthless."
Emma stared at him, profoundly moved by the raw, undeniable conviction in his voice. "He said you were weak because of the chair."
"A man's strength is not measured by his ability to walk," Angelo murmured, his tattooed hands resting calmly on the wheels of his chair. "It is measured by his willingness to stand between the monsters... and the people he cares about."
The quiet intimacy of the moment was suddenly shattered by the harsh, abrasive squawk of the encrypted radio resting on Angelo’s desk.
"Boss, we have contact," Vincent’s voice crackled through the speaker, urgent and adrenaline-fueled. "Three black SUVs just breached the outer gates. They blew the lock. We have fifteen heavily armed hostiles advancing up the main driveway. It's the eastern capos. Dominic is leading them."
"He returned faster than I anticipated," Angelo noted coldly, his expression freezing into a mask of pure executioner’s wrath. He reached for the radio. "Hold the main doors, Vincent. Force them into the grand foyer. It is a fatal choke point. Do not let them spread out into the corridors."
"Copy that. Engaging now."
The distant, muffled popping sounds of suppressed automatic gunfire echoed faintly through the thick walls of the estate. The war had officially arrived.
May you like
Emma gasped, jumping up from the sofa and running to the bed to shield the sleeping Noah with her own body.
Angelo unlocked a heavy drawer in his desk and pulled out a customized, high-caliber handgun. He checked the chamber with terrifying, practiced efficiency. He placed the weapon on his lap and slowly turned his custom black wheelchair toward the heavy oak doors of the suite, ready to meet the devil at the threshold.
