Chapter 3

The silence in the grand dining room was a physical, suffocating pressure. The tall ivory candles flickering inside their ornate brass candelabras seemed to be the only things moving in the entire, luminous space. The clear, clean lighting left absolutely no shadows for Seraphine’s cruelty to hide within.
Julian froze. His entire body went rigid, the breath catching in his broad chest. His cold eyes looked down through the open grille, the reality of the psychological and physical torture inflicted upon his bloodline cementing itself in his mind. The mother he had spent a fortune to care for abroad had been locked beneath the floorboards of his own dining room.
Before the mafia boss could react, Eleanor looked up through the open hatch. She first looked toward Julian, her face etched with a profound, restrained disbelief, as if she were looking at a ghost.
Then, the exhausted matriarch slowly turned her head. She met Seraphine’s horrified gaze across the polished walnut table.
"You told me Julian was dead," Eleanor said, her voice quiet but carrying a devastating, unshakeable certainty.
The words hit the room with the force of a detonating bomb. A collective, quiet gasp rippled through the fifty elite guests. The lie was monstrous, a psychological torment designed to break the older woman's spirit completely while Seraphine secured her grip on the Vale empire.
Julian looked briefly toward Eleanor. For a fraction of a second, the harsh, lethal tension around his eyes softened, replaced by a flash of raw, stunning tenderness as he processed the fact that his mother was alive and had believed him murdered.
Slowly, terrifyingly, Julian’s eyes shifted. The movement was predatory, his gaze moving first toward Seraphine, followed by a slow, deliberate turn of his head. His sharply defined jaw tightened until the bone threatened to snap under the pressure, the extremely short stubble on his face bristling with suppressed, explosive violence.
He held Seraphine’s eyes in a cold, furious, and unwavering stare that promised absolute destruction. The mafia boss said nothing. His silence was infinitely more dangerous than a scream, stripping away her diamonds, her satin gown, and her lies, exposing the cruel, power-hungry monster trembling beneath.
Seraphine stared up at Julian, her fair, rosy skin drained of all color, leaving her looking sickly and translucent. She gripped the fabric of her sculpted satin evening gown, her hands shaking violently. She opened her mouth to speak, to scream a denial, to call the older woman a liar, but her vocal cords were paralyzed by the sheer, overwhelming tension radiating from the man standing opposite her.
"Are you struggling to find a suitable explanation, Seraphine?" Julian finally asked.
His deep, low voice remained completely level. The measured pause between his words was a calculated instrument of psychological torture. He did not step toward her, but the sheer gravity of his presence pressed her against the wall.
"Julian, darling, please," Seraphine gasped, her American accent pitching high and breathless with panic. "She is confused! Her mind is failing her! I brought her down there to protect her because she was wandering the estate! I told her you were away on business, not dead! She misunderstood!"
"Does protecting an elder require a heavy sliding bolt secured from the outside?" Julian inquired, his perceptive eyes narrowing into cold slits.
"The maid set this up!" Seraphine cried, tears of sheer desperation welling in her eyes. She pointed a shaking, diamond-adorned finger at Lena. "She planted her there! She has been trying to poison you against me since the day I moved in! You cannot believe a servant over your future wife!"
Lena held her ground, her elegant posture unwavering despite the terror hammering in her chest. She instinctively wrapped her hands around Eleanor's frail shoulders, helping the older woman up the final step and out of the dark stairwell, shielding her from the socialite's venomous panic.

"Would my mother fabricate a nightmare to destroy the foundation of this family?" Julian asked, his voice echoing coldly off the ivory-paneled walls.
"Yes! She hates me!" Seraphine shrieked, looking frantically around the room at the seated guests, silently begging someone—anyone—to intervene. But the elite crowd sat immobilized, their fair faces pale with shock, utterly unwilling to cross the mafia boss.
