Chapter 10

The roar of Julian’s customized automatic weapon was deafening in the enclosed, smoke-filled corridor. He fired with lethal, mechanical precision. The first mercenary collapsed backward, his chest armor shattered by the armor-piercing rounds. The second man spun wildly, his assault rifle spraying blindly into the ceiling, bringing down a shower of plaster and crystal before he, too, crumpled to the floor.
The third mercenary panicked. He scrambled backward, trying to retreat down the grand marble staircase, slipping on the polished stone.
"Are you leaving so soon?" Julian asked, his deep voice carrying a terrifying, absolute calm over the ringing in their ears.
He fired a single, decisive shot. The mercenary dropped, his body tumbling down the sweeping stairs to land motionless in the grand foyer below.
The hallway fell into a sudden, eerie silence, broken only by the crackle of localized fires and the distant wail of sirens. Julian did not lower his weapon. He kept his extremely short stubble and sharply defined jawline locked in a mask of lethal focus, his perceptive eyes scanning the smoke for further threats.
"Is the perimeter secure, Marcus?" Julian demanded, pressing a finger to his comms earpiece as he slowly descended the stairs.
"Yes, Boss!" Marcus shouted over the radio. "The Voss mercenaries are retreating! We have them pinned at the outer gates! The police are three minutes out. Victor Voss overplayed his hand."
"Will you ensure none of them escape?" Julian asked coldly.
"We are mopping them up now, sir."
Julian reached the bottom of the stairs. The adrenaline was slowly ebbing from his veins, leaving behind a cold, absolute certainty. The Voss syndicate was finished. They had struck hard, but they had failed to kill the king.
He turned and ascended the stairs once more, moving swiftly back to the master suite. He knocked three times on the heavy oak doors.
"Lena. It's Julian," he announced quietly.
The heavy deadbolts clicked, and the door swung open. Lena stood there, her sophisticated black maid dress covered in dust, her fair face pale but resolute.
"Are you uninjured?" Julian asked, stepping into the room and holstering his weapon.
"We are safe," Lena breathed, stepping aside to let him in. Eleanor was resting peacefully by the fire.
Julian walked over to the bed, looking down at his mother. He felt a profound sense of relief, but as he turned back to look at Lena, he realized the dynamics of his world had permanently shifted. The beautiful housemaid had stood her ground when the entire city was burning around them.
"Will you follow me to my study while my men clear the house?" Julian asked, his eyes locking onto Lena’s.
"Yes, sir," Lena nodded.
They walked in silence to his private study. Julian poured two glasses of amber whiskey, offering one to her.
"Are you prepared for the reality of this life, Lena?" Julian asked quietly, stepping close to her in the warm, golden light of the desk lamp. "The world outside these walls is dangerous. My enemies are retreating today, but there will always be others."
"Are you asking if I am afraid to stand beside you?" Lena asked, answering his question with one of her own, a spark of defiant courage in her expressive eyes.
"I am asking if you understand that once you step fully into my life, there is no stepping back," Julian stated, his deep voice a low, mesmerizing whisper.
Lena held his gaze, her heart fluttering against her ribs. She had seen the monster he could be to his enemies, but she had also seen the man who would walk through fire for his family.

"Do you believe I would ever want to step back, Julian?" Lena asked softly, using his first name with a new, quiet confidence.
"Shall we face whatever comes next together, then?" Julian asked, raising his glass in a silent toast to the woman who had saved his family, ready to rebuild his empire with her by his side.
