Chapter 2

The absolute silence in the grand dining room was a physical weight, pressing down on Amelie’s chest until she felt she could hardly breathe. The golden light from the tiered crystal chandeliers suddenly felt harsh and exposing. She stood frozen beside the polished walnut table, her hand still resting delicately on Brennan's powerful wrist. She was acutely aware of the hundreds of eyes staring at her, but the only gaze that mattered belonged to the mafia boss sitting in front of her.

Amelie maintained eye contact with Brennan. She forced herself not to look away from his cold, perceptive eyes, which were searching her softly rounded face with a terrifying, piercing intensity. Her inner brows lifted helplessly, a silent plea for understanding as she navigated the most dangerous moment of her life. Moisture gathered rapidly beneath her delicate eyelashes.

"Isadora put drops in it," Amelie answered. Her voice was thin, fragile, but incredibly clear, carrying flawlessly across the dead silent room.

A collective, silent gasp seemed to ripple through the velvet dining chairs. The guests stared in unadulterated shock. The implication hung in the air—an assassination attempt at the engagement dinner, orchestrated by the future bride right under the boss's nose.

Before Brennan could process the magnitude of the accusation, Isadora intervened.

Isadora smoothly adjusted her posture, the sculpted emerald satin of her gown rustling softly. She met Brennan’s intense gaze with a faint, indulgent smile, projecting the image of a devoted, fiercely protective fiancée attempting to soothe a hysterical servant.

"It only helps you sleep," Isadora stated, her delivery smooth, soothing, and laced with a dismissive amusement.

She offered the lie with effortless perfection, but her eyes desperately searched Brennan’s angular face for any sign of acceptance, any indication that he would accept her version of reality and dismiss the beautiful housemaid's panic as a gross misunderstanding.

Brennan did not nod. He did not agree. He moved with the predatory, liquid grace of a man who commanded an empire. He slowly set the untouched crystal glass back down on the table, the sharp clink echoing loudly.

He rose to his full, imposing height, his broad shoulders completely dominating the space. He stepped smoothly around his chair, placing his tailored dark suit directly between Isadora and the terrified housemaid. Sophie immediately scooted closer, pressing her small body against Amelie’s crisp white apron.

Isadora’s indulgent smile began to tighten at the corners, hardening into a rigid line of panic as she realized he was not dismissing the girl, nor was he drinking the tonic.

The silence stretched, thick and suffocating, until it was broken by the smallest voice in the room.

Sophie, standing securely beside Amelie, looked directly across the table at Isadora. The six-year-old girl’s lower lip trembled slightly, her eyes welling with unshed tears. She didn't look angry; she looked profoundly, devastatingly broken.

"Mommy died after that drink," Sophie said.

Her voice remained small and painfully matter-of-fact, spoken as though she were simply explaining a simple, undeniable truth to a confused adult.

Brennan’s cold eyes snapped to his daughter. He looked at Sophie for a brief, incredibly still beat. The entire room seemed to hold its breath as the horrifying reality of the child's statement sank into the mafia boss's consciousness. His wife's sudden heart failure six months ago had never been fully explained.

Then, Brennan slowly shifted his eyes toward Isadora.

His head followed his gaze in a slight, deliberate turn. The small artistic tattoo on his neck shifted above his collar. The muscles in his sharply defined jaw firmed into unyielding granite. His mouth became completely still.

He held Isadora’s gaze with cold, deliberate, unwavering silence. He did not yell. He did not ask a question immediately. He simply stared at her, stripping away every layer of her emerald satin and diamonds, exposing the monstrous rot underneath. Every guest remained perfectly attentive and utterly motionless, terrified to even draw a breath, waiting for the execution to begin.
