Chapter 1

The cascading crystal chandeliers cast a warm, decadent golden light across the gilded ceiling moldings and ivory-paneled walls of the Crowe estate. The grand dining room hummed with the low, calculated conversations of the city’s most dangerous elite. Tall candles glowed fiercely in heavy silver candelabras, their flames reflecting off pristine white roses, fine porcelain, and crystal stemware. Dozens of capos, politicians, and high-society associates sat in plush champagne velvet dining chairs around polished walnut tables, entirely oblivious to the silent agony gnawing at the man sitting at the head of the room.
Brennan Crowe was a mafia boss who commanded absolute authority. Handsome as a movie star, his broad, powerful shoulders filled out a tailored dark three-piece suit flawlessly. His angular face, defined by a high-bridged nose and a sharply defined jaw, was shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. Thick, slightly wavy hair was swept naturally back, though a few loose strands fell carelessly over his forehead. His cold, perceptive eyes usually missed nothing. The refined artistic tattoos across his hands and fingers, generously spaced, caught the light whenever he adjusted his wristwatch or touched his family signet ring.
Beside him sat his six-year-old daughter, Sophie. Dressed in a delicate ivory party dress, a soft cardigan, and flat shoes, she looked incredibly small and fragile. Her mother had died unexpectedly six months ago, and the grief still clung to the child like a heavy shadow. She stayed close to Amelie Hayes, the housemaid who had become her primary source of comfort.
Amelie was beautiful, with softly rounded cheeks, delicate features, and expressive brows. Her dark hair was gathered into a loose, elegant low bun. She moved with a slender figure and elegant posture, wearing a sophisticated black maid dress with a cinched waist, a fitted silhouette, and a short A-line skirt. Her crisp white apron, collar, and cuffs were stark against the dark fabric.
Opposite them stood Isadora Blake, Brennan’s newly minted fiancée. She was draped in a sculpted emerald satin gown that clung to her curves, diamond earrings flashing with every graceful movement. She wore a massive engagement ring, a symbol of her rapid ascension in the Crowe syndicate. She possessed smooth manners and a carefully reassuring smile, projecting the image of a perfect future matriarch.
The dinner had concluded, and Isadora had personally offered Brennan a special after-dinner tonic, presented in a small crystal glass.
Amelie stepped forward to refill the water pitchers. Her heart was hammering a frantic, terrifying rhythm against her ribs. Only moments before, while retrieving the ice, she had witnessed Isadora slipping a small, unmarked bottle from her emerald clutch and adding several drops to the tonic.
Brennan reached out, his tattooed fingers wrapping around the small crystal glass containing the murky liquid. He raised it slowly.
Amelie’s breath hitched. Before she could process the danger she was placing herself in, she moved. She reached out, her slender fingers gently catching Brennan’s wrist just before the rim of the glass reached his lips.
Amelie’s fingers trembled violently against the tailored wool of his suit. Across the table, Isadora’s smooth, reassuring smile instantly tightened into a brittle, furious line.
Brennan stopped. He did not pull his hand away. He held the glass perfectly still and turned his head, looking directly into Amelie’s wide, terrified eyes.
"Amelie," Brennan said. His deep, low voice cut through the ambient noise of the dining room. He allowed a slow, controlled pause to stretch after her name, letting the sheer gravity of his presence suffocate the room.

Every single guest stopped eating and speaking. The low hum of conversation was severed instantly. Dozens of powerful men and women turned their heads toward the head of the table in total, suffocating silence.
"Why stop me?" Brennan asked.
