Chapter 8

The bright, cinematic colors of the conservatory seemed to focus entirely on Silas as he stood over his fallen fiancée. The scent of crushed citrus leaves and spilled damp soil mixed heavily with the sharp tang of shattered porcelain. Victoria trembled on the floor, her elegant facade utterly destroyed, realizing that the empire she thought she was marrying into was a fortress she had just set on fire from the inside.

Silas took one slow, deliberate step toward her. The polished black leather of his loafers made a sharp, echoing sound against the stone tile.

"Discipline," Silas whispered.

His deep, resonant voice was dead calm. He spoke incredibly slowly, keeping his volume terrifyingly low, yet the measured cadence echoed clearly across the silent room. Every word sounded cold, sharp, and dripping with an apocalyptic promise.

He tilted his head slightly, the artistic tattoos on his neck flexing, creating a mesmerizing but profoundly dangerous image under the bright light.

"You believe," Silas continued, pausing to let the weight of his words crush her remaining hope, "that denying oxygen... to a suffocating child... is discipline."

"I was angry, Silas! I wasn't thinking!" Victoria sobbed, tears ruining her perfectly applied makeup, cutting dark tracks down her pale face. "She is so spoiled! You treat her like a queen, and you ignore me! I just wanted her to stop crying!"

Silas did not blink. The chilling, calculating stare he leveled at her stripped away every layer of her pathetic defense.

"A three-year-old," Silas stated, his voice a low, vibrating hum of pure, concentrated executioner's wrath.

He looked down at her, his eyes devoid of any human empathy, warmth, or forgiveness. The absolute finality in his tone left no room for negotiation.

"You broke all the rules," Silas declared, the words hanging heavily in the bright, luminous air. "Now... I have none."

Victoria’s face became a portrait of pure, paralyzing fright. The color drained entirely from her lips, leaving her looking sickly and translucent. She opened her mouth to beg, to plead for her status, but the sheer, suffocating terror choking her throat prevented any sound from escaping. She understood the true, horrific implication of his words. He was not just breaking off the engagement; he was officially removing her family's protection. In the Mafia, a broken rule meant blood, and she had just sanctioned her own execution.

"Silas, you can't do this!" Victoria finally shrieked, scrambling backward on the wet tiles. "My family controls the ports! If you touch me or my brother, my father will declare war! He will shut down your entire operation!"

"Let him declare war," Silas replied smoothly, a dark, terrifying smile touching the corners of his mouth. "I will burn his ports to ash... before I allow a woman who harms my child... to walk out of this house breathing."
