Chapter 1

The glass-roofed conservatory of the New York mansion was a masterpiece of architectural brilliance, designed to capture the sun perfectly. Natural, cinematic lighting flooded the expansive room, entirely devoid of any muddy or yellow tint. The pristine white beams illuminated the vibrant, bright colors of the lush citrus trees, the tiered ceramic planter stands, and the plush wicker seating scattered across the decorative stone tables. It was an oasis of tranquility hidden deep within the fortress of a ruthless Mafia empire. Yet, beneath the canopy of manicured leaves and the scent of blooming lemons, a quiet, venomous tension had been brewing all afternoon.
Gloria Vance sat gracefully on a high-backed wicker chair, her posture radiating an effortless, timeless dignity. At seventy-two years old, she possessed smooth, dark mahogany skin that bore the elegant signs of aging, mapping a life of survival and triumph. She wore a tailored blouse, a soft cashmere cardigan, pressed trousers, and comfortable walking shoes, with a classic leather handbag resting at her feet. She kept a watchful, loving eye on her granddaughter, Amara.
Three-year-old Amara was a vision of innocence amidst the dark world her family controlled. She had beautiful, warm cocoa-brown skin that glowed under the bright conservatory lights. She wore an elegant blush-pink child’s dress, a matching cardigan, and shiny little flats. Hanging from a delicate strap across her chest was a small, brightly colored pouch containing her asthma inhaler. She was currently fascinated by a large, ripe lemon hanging low on a branch, her tiny fingers reaching out to brush against the textured peel.
"Don't pull too hard, sweet girl," Gloria instructed, her voice rich and melodic with a warm American accent. "The tree needs its fruit until they are ready to fall."
"I just want to touch it, Nana," Amara replied, her bright eyes wide with curiosity.
Standing a few feet away, observing the tender moment with absolute disdain, was Victoria Thorne. At thirty-nine years old, Victoria possessed pale, fair porcelain skin that starkly contrasted with the rich tones of the Vance family. She wore an elegant, champagne-colored formal outfit that clung to her slender frame, paired with towering stiletto heels. Heavy diamond jewelry glittered on her neck, and a massive engagement ring weighed down her left hand—a symbol of the political alliance she had forged with Silas Vance.
"The child is entirely too pampered, Gloria," Victoria remarked coldly, her sharp American accent cutting through the peaceful atmosphere of the room. "She treats this entire estate like her personal playground. Silas indulges her every whim. It is going to make her weak."
"She is three years old, Victoria," Gloria replied calmly, not taking the bait. "She is a child. There will be plenty of time for the harsh realities of the world later."
"In our world, weakness is a death sentence," a male voice interjected.
Sterling Thorne, Victoria’s forty-two-year-old brother and a key Mafia associate, stepped out from behind a row of tall ferns. He had fair, ruddy skin with a slight pinkish undertone, and wore an impeccably tailored charcoal suit, a luxury wristwatch, and polished leather shoes. He looked at the little girl with profound irritation.

"She needs discipline," Sterling added, adjusting his cuffs.
Before Gloria could respond to the arrogant siblings, a sudden, terrifying sound interrupted the tense conversation. Amara let out a sharp, ragged gasp. The little girl stumbled back from the citrus tree, her small hands clutching her chest. Her beautiful cocoa-brown skin began to pale as she fought to pull air into her tightening lungs. The asthma attack had struck without warning, swift and brutal.
