Chapter 3

The heavy doors clicked shut, a sound so subtle yet so definitive that it seemed to alter the barometric pressure in the room. Silas Vance stepped out of the council chamber and into the bright, cinematic light of the conservatory.

At thirty-two years old, Silas was a vision of terrifying, deeply masculine power. He was as handsome as a movie star, his deep, rich dark brown skin boasting a flawless, glowing complexion. His thick, slightly wavy dark hair was naturally slicked back, with a few loose strands falling effortlessly over his forehead, creating a charming, romantic look that completely belied the monster lurking beneath his ribs. His angular face, high-bridged nose, and sharply defined jawline were framed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble.

He wore a custom-tailored dark suit, but his black dress shirt was unbuttoned at the chest, revealing the smooth, powerful musculature beneath. Refined, sharp artistic tattoos crawled up his hands and fingers, designed with enough negative space to look elegant rather than dense.

Silas took one step into the room and completely froze.

His cold, sharp, intimidating eyes instantly assessed the scene. He saw his mother, Gloria, struggling to stand from the wicker chair. He saw Victoria standing with a triumphant, cruel smirk. And then, his gaze locked onto the floor.

He saw his daughter, Amara, curled on the tiles, gasping desperately for air, her beautiful cocoa-brown skin paling rapidly.

The charming Mafia boss vanished. The apex predator took his place.

Silas did not run. He did not shout. He moved with a blinding, terrifying speed that seemed to defy his massive frame. He swept past Victoria, completely ignoring her sudden gasp of surprise. His sharp eyes had already tracked the trajectory of the plastic inhaler resting beneath the heavy stone table.

He slid to the floor, his polished black leather loafers scraping the tile, and immediately retrieved the inhaler. In the same fluid, unbroken motion, he dropped to his knees beside Amara.

"I've got you, baby. Daddy’s here," Silas murmured. His voice was incredibly low, steady, and anchoring.

He lifted Amara’s trembling body against his chest, placed the inhaler to her lips, and depressed the canister. "Breathe in, Amara. Deep breath. Right now."

Amara sucked in the medication with a ragged, desperate wheeze. Her tiny fingers dug into the fabric of his black dress shirt, clutching him as if he were the only solid thing in a collapsing universe.

Gloria steadies herself against the wicker chair, her chest heaving as she watched her son save her granddaughter's life.

After a few agonizing seconds, the medication began to open Amara's airways. The terrifying wheezing slowly transitioned into heavy, exhausted panting. The warm color began to return to her skin.

"Daddy…" Amara cried between ragged breaths, tears streaming down her cheeks as she buried her face into his chest. "I can’t breathe."

"You are breathing now, my love," Silas whispered, pressing a fierce, protective kiss to the top of her head. "You are safe. I am right here."

He held her for another long moment, ensuring her lungs were fully functioning, ensuring his entire world hadn't just been stolen from him. Then, very slowly, Silas began to rise to his feet.
