Chapter 1

The afternoon sun blazed over the manicured expanse of the Greenwich Polo Club, bathing the emerald turf and white perimeter railings in vivid, cinematic clarity. Crystal flutes of vintage champagne sparkled on silver trays beneath striped canopies, while the crisp autumn breeze carried the scents of expensive cigars, rich leather, and roasted meats. It was an annual gathering of Connecticut’s shadow elite—men in bespoke Italian tailoring and women draped in heirloom diamonds, their fair, rosy skin glowing under the cloudless azure sky.

At the edge of the elevated viewing platform, twenty-seven-year-old Alina Carbone stood holding her three-year-old daughter, Lucy. Alina looked breathtaking in a pleated lavender luncheon dress, her delicate diamond wedding band catching the high glare of the sun. Lucy rested securely against her hip, dressed in a pastel cream dress and a knit cardigan, her small patent-leather flats dangling above the wooden railing.

Below them stretched the practice lane—a soft, four-foot drop into deep, raked sand where grooms prepared the mounts between chukkers.

"Look at the big brown horse over there, sweetheart," Alina whispered softly, brushing a stray lock of hair behind Lucy’s rosy ear. "Do you see the red ribbons in his mane?"

"He’s pretty, Mommy," Lucy giggled, her tiny fingers clutching Alina’s collar. "Can Daddy take me on a ride later?"

"We’ll ask him as soon as he finishes talking to Uncle Frank," Alina smiled.

A shadow fell over them from behind, sharp and deliberate. The sound of four-inch stiletto heels striking the hardwood platform clicked with predatory rhythm.

Ramona Carbone approached like an oncoming storm. At forty, Lorenzo’s older cousin exuded an air of bitter royalty, draped in an ivory designer shift dress, diamond chandelier earrings swaying beside her jawline. Her fair face was twisted into a sneer of pure venom as she stared at the back of Alina’s neck.

Without pausing, without a single word of hesitation, Ramona stepped forward and shoved both hands violently into Alina’s shoulder blades.

The force was brutal and sudden. Alina gasped as her footing slipped from the edge of the platform. Gravity seized them, but in that fraction of a second, Alina’s maternal instinct took over entirely. She twisted her body mid-air, wrapping her arms completely around Lucy, using her own back and shoulders to absorb the impact as they plummeted into the sand lane below.

They crashed into the soft, deep sand with a muted thud. Sand showered over Alina’s bare legs and ruined her dress, but Lucy remained cradled against her chest, unharmed though terrified. The three-year-old let out a sharp, piercing wail that ripped through the polite murmur of the viewing lawn.

Above them, leaning over the painted railing, Ramona smoothed her silk skirt with unhurried contempt. Her eyes glittered with sadistic pleasure.

"Cheap blood belongs on the ground," Ramona sneered loud enough for twenty nearby guests to hear.

A collective gasp rippled across the terrace. Several women took half-steps backward, their champagne flutes trembling. No one spoke; no one dared move toward the edge.
