Chapter 7

Luca did not yell.
That impressed me.
He simply removed the Rinaldi pin from his father’s lapel.
Owen looked stunned.
“You don’t have the authority.”
Luca stared at him.
“Neither do you.”
Then he placed the pin on my table.
Not giving it to me.
Rejecting Owen’s use of it.
Important difference.
Lorenzo watched.
“Young man, your father was protecting your future.”
Luca looked at him.
“By putting my grandmother in a coffin?”
Lorenzo sighed.
“She was never going to be harmed.”
Agnes laughed.
Not kindly.
“Men always say that after they lose control of the lid.”
The room went quiet.
My mother had spent most of her life avoiding public conflict.
Not tonight.
Lorenzo looked at her.
“You made Antonio weak.”
Agnes stood.
Slowly.
Luca helped only when she allowed it.
Then she faced him.
“No.”
Her voice shook.
“You hated that he learned love did not require obedience.”
That struck deeper than anything I could say.
Lorenzo’s jaw tightened.
Then Agnes revealed something I did not know.
Antonio never intended to exile Lorenzo permanently.
After five years, my father sent him an offer.
Return without claim to succession.
Keep personal property.
Rejoin family.
Lorenzo refused.
Why?
Because he wanted apology first.
Not for being falsely accused.
For not being chosen.
My father would not give it.
So eleven years of exile became eleven years of grievance.
Lorenzo glared at Agnes.
“You had no right to tell that.”
“There.”
She almost smiled.
“That word again.”
Right.
Who had the right to speak.
Lead.
Stay.
Leave.
Live.
Even die, apparently.
Lorenzo sat.
For the first time, his performance cracked.
Then I asked the fourteen standing guests a simple question.
“How many of you knew about the caskets?”
No hands.
Interesting.
I looked at Lorenzo.
“You told them you were returning to correct succession.”
Then at Owen.
“You did not tell them correction included forcing an old woman into a coffin.”
One guest, Marcus Rinaldi, stood again.
This time facing Lorenzo.
“You said Agnes agreed to disappear.”
Lorenzo smiled.
“She would have.”
Marcus looked disgusted.
May you like
Coalitions built on selective information collapse quickly when the missing details are ugly enough.
I had found the fracture.
