Chapter 2

The heavy oak doors at the far end of the dining hall swung open with a resounding, authoritative thud. The ambient murmur of the wealthy American guests died instantly. The bright, vivid colors of the room seemed to sharpen, acting as an unforgiving spotlight on the unfolding cruelty.
Vincent Bellacorte stepped over the threshold.
At fifty-two years old, the veteran Mafia boss possessed a deeply masculine, overwhelmingly intimidating presence. He was a man carved from granite and violence, wearing a perfectly tailored dark three-piece suit. His crisp white dress shirt strained slightly across his broad, powerful shoulders. The heavy gold family signet ring on his finger caught the bright chandelier light, alongside the gleaming face of his luxury wristwatch. His polished leather shoes struck the marble floor with a slow, deliberate, and terrifying rhythm.
Vincent’s cold, sharp eyes instantly locked onto the scene at the end of the table. He saw his cousin’s hand clamped around his son’s jaw. The air in the room turned to solid ice.
"Adrian," Vincent said. His voice was a low, resonant rumble.
He didn't run. He closed the distance with the explosive, terrifying speed of an apex predator. Before Adrian could even register the danger and release the child, Vincent was upon them. Vincent reached out with his massive, powerful hand. He clamped his fingers around Adrian’s wrist and violently tore his cousin's hand away from Eli’s face.
The force of the movement caused Adrian to stumble backward, his fair skin paling instantly.
Freed from the painful grip, Eli let out a breathless, heartbreaking wail. The three-year-old boy immediately turned and ran behind his father’s legs. He buried his tear-stained, rosy face into the dark wool of Vincent’s tailored trousers, his tiny hands clutching the fabric with desperate, white-knuckled intensity.
"Dad…" Eli sobbed, his voice breaking through heavy, gasping hiccups that echoed across the silent dining hall. "Dad… Maria never hurt me."
Vincent placed a large, protective hand gently onto his son’s head, shielding the boy completely. He did not look down at the child; his piercing gaze remained entirely fixed on his cousin.
"He was confused, Vincent," Adrian stammered, holding his wrist where Vincent’s grip had left angry red marks. His American accent was tight with sudden, undeniable panic. "The boy is frightened. I was simply trying to get to the bottom of an incident in the east wing."
"You were forcing... a confession," Vincent murmured, the controlled pauses between his words highlighting the absolute danger of his tone. "From a three-year-old child."

"She is a liability, Vincent!" Adrian argued, pointing an accusing finger at the terrified maid. "Maria is stealing from this family! I know it for a fact!"
"And yet," Vincent replied, his voice dropping an octave into a register of pure executioner’s wrath, "my son says otherwise."
