Chapter 4

The cinematic, golden light of the chandeliers seemed to sharpen and focus entirely on the corner of the room where the towering Christmas tree stood. Vanessa excused herself from the donors, her emerald satin gown rustling as she stepped deliberately toward the shadows where Audrey was standing.

Audrey froze, her hands gripping the edges of the silver serving tray so tightly her fingers ached. She wanted to turn and run, but she was trapped in the luminous, crowded salon, surrounded by fifty guests.

Vanessa stopped directly beside the housemaid. She positioned herself carefully, ensuring the angle of her body shielded her actions from the main room. With a smooth, calculated motion, Vanessa reached out and seized Audrey’s left wrist.

The grip was agonizingly tight, the socialite's manicured nails digging into the maid's fragile skin. Vanessa kept the physical assault entirely concealed behind the voluminous folds of her emerald gown.

Vanessa looked directly at Audrey. The socialite maintained her polished, flawless public smile, but her eyes burned with malicious, lethal triumph.

"Smile," Vanessa commanded, her voice dropping into a quiet, venomous whisper meant only for the terrified girl. "You saw nothing. If you breathe a word to him, you will never see the light of day again."

Audrey’s breath hitched in her throat. The color drained entirely from her fair face. She stared at the woman, her mind racing with absolute terror, the chilling memory of the pitch-black cellar rushing back to suffocate her.

Before Audrey could formulate a response, three-year-old Milo wandered over to the Christmas tree, stopping right beside the two women. The toddler, completely oblivious to the lethal tension radiating from his future stepmother, looked up with bright, innocent eyes.

Milo lifted his two small stuffed rabbits. With deliberate, toddler-like concentration, he gently pressed the stuffed rabbits’ noses together.

He looked proudly at Vanessa, fully intending to participate in the activity she had taught him the day before.

"Uncle kiss-kiss Auntie," Milo said softly, his voice punctuated with natural, adorable toddler pauses. He then brought a small finger to his lips. "Shhh!"

The childish, clear American accent sliced through the sophisticated chatter of the salon with the devastating force of a detonating bomb.
