Chapter 2

The absolute silence in the grand dining room was a physical weight, pressing down on Vera’s chest until she felt she could hardly breathe. The golden light from the tiered crystal chandeliers suddenly felt harsh and exposing. She stood frozen beside the polished walnut table, her hands clutching the crisp white fabric of her apron. She had risked her life to persuade this broken man to come out of hiding, and now, standing under the scrutiny of the mafia boss, she felt the sheer magnitude of her action.
Vera maintained eye contact with Elias. She forced herself not to look away from his cold, perceptive eyes, which were searching her softly oval face with a terrifying, piercing intensity. Her expressive brows drew together in a mixture of fear and resolute defiance. Her lips trembled slightly, but she refused to back down.
Before Vera could force the words past the lump in her throat, Marielle intervened.
Marielle smoothly adjusted her posture, the sculpted satin of her evening gown rustling softly against the upholstery. She met Elias’s stunned gaze with a small, reassuring smile, projecting the image of a bewildered, deeply offended fiancée attempting to shield her reputation from a cruel, drunken interruption.
"Just an old drunk, darling," Marielle stated, her delivery carefully measured, laced with a melodic, dismissive sweetness.
She offered the lie with practiced perfection, but her eyes frantically searched Elias’s angular face for any sign of agreement, any indication that he would accept her version of reality and dismiss the elderly man and the housemaid.
Elias did not nod. He did not agree. He moved with the predatory, liquid grace of a man who commanded an empire. Pushing his chair back, he rose slowly to his full, imposing height. He stepped smoothly beside Vera and Edgar, placing his broad shoulders and tailored dark suit directly between the frail old man and his frantic fiancée, forming an impenetrable wall.
Vera took a shallow breath, realizing she now had the protection of the most dangerous man in the city.
"Edgar caused your wife's crash," Vera said. Her voice was quiet, fragile, but incredibly clear, carrying flawlessly across the dead silent room.
A collective, silent gasp seemed to ripple through the velvet dining chairs. The guests stared in unadulterated shock. The tragic accident, the event that had broken the heart of the Ravenshaw syndicate, was suddenly being called a murder right at the engagement table.
The tension in the room snapped, not with a roar, but with a quiet, exhausted confession.
Edgar, emboldened by the massive frame of Elias shielding him, looked past the mafia boss, looking directly at the woman in the satin gown. His trembling fingers suddenly became still around the crystal water glass.
"You paid me, Marielle," Edgar said.
He spoke quietly, without looking away from her. The words emerged without triumph or malice, merely a statement of absolute, irrefutable fact from a man who could no longer carry the weight of a monstrous sin.
Elias’s eyes remained on the elderly mechanic for one long, silent beat. He absorbed the sheer vulnerability in Edgar's posture, the undeniable truth written across the man's frail, wrinkled face.
Then, Elias slowly shifted that terrifying gaze toward Marielle.

His head followed his eyes in a slight, deliberate turn. The small artistic tattoo on his neck became visible above his collar. The muscles in his sharply defined jaw firmed into unyielding granite. His expression became completely still, settling into a cold, controlled fury that swallowed all the golden light in the room.
He held Marielle’s eyes in unwavering silence. He did not yell. He did not ask a question immediately. He simply stared at her, stripping away every layer of her satin and diamonds, exposing the rot underneath. Every guest remained perfectly attentive and utterly motionless, terrified to even draw a breath, waiting for the execution to begin.
