"Why’s Teddy afraid?” / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2

The clatter of fine porcelain and polished silverware filled the room as the main dishes were cleared and the dessert course approached. Holly moved seamlessly through the crowd, carrying a small silver tray holding a polished water bowl. Despite the bright, airy lighting of the ballroom, a heavy sense of unease settled in her chest. She kept her eyes averted from the mafia capos, focusing entirely on the young boy and the small spaniel puppy resting near his feet. Teddy, a five-month-old spaniel, was wearing a broad red Christmas ribbon around his neck, looking incredibly small amidst the towering velvet chairs.

"Ensure the boss's glass is refilled, Holly," the head butler instructed in a hushed tone as they crossed paths near the marble columns.

"I will take care of it, sir," Holly replied softly, her American accent carrying a gentle, melodic cadence.

She approached the head table, stepping deliberately beside Adrian’s chair. The proximity to the mafia boss was always intimidating; his sheer physical presence and the artistic tattoos covering his hands commanded a terrifying level of respect. Holly knelt gracefully onto the cream marble floor, placing the small water bowl beside Teddy.

As the cool water sloshed gently into the bowl, Holly noticed a subtle, sharp movement from the corner of her eye. Camille’s manicured hand was reaching slowly toward a small black remote resting stealthily beside her gold-rimmed porcelain plate.

The moment Camille’s fingers brushed the plastic, Teddy let out a faint, terrified whimper. The puppy immediately scrambled backward, retreating desperately to press his small, trembling body against Owen’s legs.

Holly froze. Her expressive eyes widened as she noticed the unnatural, conditioned terror in the animal's movement. She looked from the cowering puppy to the small black remote under Camille's hand, a horrifying realization dawning on her.

Adrian, a man whose survival relied on an unparalleled hyper-awareness of his surroundings, instantly sensed the shift in the room's energy. He followed Holly’s paralyzed gaze downward, his sharp eyes catching the trembling spaniel pressed against his son’s navy suit.

Adrian did not move frantically. He slowly turned his head, his swept-back hair catching the light. He locked his gaze directly onto the housemaid kneeling beside his chair.

"Holly," Adrian said.

His voice was not loud, but it possessed a controlled, magnetic resonance that demanded absolute submission. The effect on the room was instantaneous. Every single dinner guest at the long banquet table stopped eating. Forks hovered motionless over fine porcelain plates. The polite, affluent conversation died in their throats, replaced by a suffocating, terrified silence. Dozens of faces turned toward the head of the table.

"Why's Teddy afraid?" Adrian asked, his words slow and measured.

The entire ballroom held its breath. Holly looked up, meeting Adrian’s cold, unwavering gaze. Her heart hammered against her ribs as she prepared to break the cardinal rule of her employment.

Camille shifted smoothly in her velvet chair, attempting to intercept the explosive tension. She looked directly at Adrian. A reassuring smile appeared on her lips, but it arrived a fraction of a second too late.

"Teddy cries for attention, darling," Camille stated, her voice light and entirely steady as her fingers settled defensively over the small black remote.

Holly took a shallow breath. She reached out toward the cowering puppy and gently moved the loose, broad red Christmas ribbon aside, revealing the thick, black electronic collar hidden beneath it.

Holly looked directly at Adrian, her voice quiet but devastatingly clear in the silent room. "This collar gives electric shocks."

Adrian’s jaw tightened. He reached down with his heavily tattooed hand and snapped the collar’s quick-release buckle, pulling the device free.
