Chapter 9

The transition from housemaid to primary caregiver happened with the ruthless, terrifying efficiency that characterized Dominic Ashford’s entire empire. By noon the following day, Nora’s meager belongings had been moved from the cramped staff quarters in the basement to a sprawling, luxurious suite adjoining his mother's bedroom on the second floor. The estate manager had quickly provided a wardrobe of elegant, practical clothing, entirely replacing her stiff black and white maid uniforms.
Nora spent her first official day in her new role sitting in the sunlit conservatory with the elderly woman. She wore comfortable trousers and a soft cashmere sweater, a fresh, professional bandage wrapped securely around her sprained wrist.
Dominic’s mother seemed remarkably more lucid today, the oppressive fear of Vivienne’s cruelty having evaporated overnight. They spent the morning drinking tea and looking through old photo albums, Nora gently guiding the conversation whenever the older woman grew confused.
"You have very kind eyes, my dear," the older woman smiled, patting Nora’s hand across the small wicker table. "Much kinder than the other one."
"Thank you, Mrs. Ashford," Nora smiled warmly.
The heavy glass doors of the conservatory opened silently.
Dominic stepped into the bright, airy room. He had just returned from a meeting in the city, dressed in a sharp, tailored gray suit, his overcoat draped casually over his powerful shoulders. The extremely short, neat stubble on his jawline caught the sunlight. He looked dangerously handsome, his presence instantly shifting the gravity in the room.
"How is she today?" Dominic asked, walking over to the table. He didn't use his terrifying, commanding tone; his deep voice was a low, comforting rumble.
"She is doing wonderfully, Mr. Ashford," Nora replied, attempting to stand up out of habit to greet her employer formally.
"Stay seated, Nora," Dominic commanded gently, placing a heavy, tattooed hand on her shoulder to stop her from rising. The brief physical contact sent a jolt of electricity straight down her spine. "And we discussed this. When it is just the three of us, you do not need to call me Mr. Ashford."
Nora flushed slightly, a warm pink blooming across her fair skin. The intimacy of the request caught her off guard. "Okay... Dominic."
He smiled faintly, a subtle curve of his lips that entirely transformed his dangerous face. He leaned down and kissed his mother’s cheek. "I have to attend to some business regarding Ethan Cole's... departure. I will be in my study if you need anything."
"Of course," Nora nodded.
As Dominic turned to leave, the encrypted smartphone in his pocket began to vibrate violently. He pulled it out, glancing at the screen. The faint smile vanished instantly, entirely replaced by the cold, calculating mask of the mafia boss.
"Marcus," Dominic answered, his voice dropping into an icy, lethal register.
He listened for a brief second, his sharp jawline clenching tight.
"Are you certain?" Dominic asked, his eyes narrowing. He glanced quickly at Nora and his mother, ensuring they couldn't hear the specifics of the violence.
"Yes, Boss," Marcus's voice cracked over the secure line. "The feds raided the Southside port warehouses an hour ago. They bypassed our outer security completely. They had the exact manifest codes."
"How?" Dominic demanded smoothly, though his knuckles turned white around the phone.
"It was Vivienne, Boss," Marcus explained grimly. "When we dropped her at the city limits last night, she didn't run. She walked straight into a federal field office. She traded everything she knew about our shipping routes in exchange for immunity and witness protection."
Dominic went completely still. The domestic dispute had just morphed into a massive, existential threat to his entire empire. Vivienne hadn't just tortured his mother; she had attempted to dismantle the syndicate.
"Is the task force moving on the estate?" Dominic asked, calculating the timeline.
"Not yet, Boss. But they are securing warrants," Marcus confirmed. "We have a leak in the DA's office who tipped us off. They are coming for you, Dominic. We need to lock the city down."
May you like
Dominic slowly lowered the phone. The war for the city was far from over. It was only just beginning.
"Assemble the heavy teams," Dominic ordered quietly into the phone. "We are going to the docks. It's time to teach the feds what happens when they rely on a bitter woman's intel."
