Chapter 9

The absolute certainty in Nathaniel’s vow hung in the bright, luminous air of the sunroom. The terrifying reality of his violent world was laid bare, yet Lily felt absolutely no fear of the man standing before her. Instead, a profound, overwhelming sense of safety washed over her. For the first time since her father's death, she wasn't running.

Nathaniel slowly released her shoulders, taking a half-step back, though his penetrating gaze never left her face. He reached into the inner pocket of his tailored suit jacket and pulled out a small, sleek black box.

"I had my security team sweep your new suite," Nathaniel said, his voice returning to its calm, measured cadence. "We upgraded the reinforced glass and installed a biometric lock on the nursery door. But I want you to have this."

He opened the box and held it out to her. Resting on the black velvet was a heavy, dull-gray keycard on a thick titanium lanyard.

"What is it?" Lily asked, tentatively taking the lanyard from the box. The metal felt cold and substantial in her palm.

"It's a master override," Nathaniel explained, his deep voice dropping lower. "It accesses the private elevator, the underground armory, and the emergency subterranean exit beneath the estate. There are only two in existence. I have one, and now you have the other."

Lily stared at the keycard in shock. Giving her the master override wasn't just a security measure; it was a profound transfer of power. It meant she had unrestricted access to the most secure, sensitive areas of his empire. It was a level of trust he hadn't even granted to his highest-ranking capos, let alone his former fiancée.

"Nathaniel," Lily breathed, her heart hammering against her ribs. She looked up at his angular, handsome face. "This is... I can't take this. The capos will object."

"The capos do not question my decisions," Nathaniel stated coldly, dismissing the idea entirely. He stepped closer again, his broad shoulders blocking the sunlight. "You hold the life of my daughter in your hands every single day. I trust you with her. Therefore, I trust you with everything else."

He reached out, his tattooed fingers gently grazing her hand as he helped her slip the heavy lanyard over her head. The titanium chain settled against her collarbone, a cold, heavy reminder of the dangerous world she had just been fully integrated into.

"Thank you," Lily whispered, her fair, rosy cheeks flushing under his intense proximity.

"You don't ever need to thank me, Lily," Nathaniel murmured. He didn't pull his hand away immediately. His knuckles brushed lightly against the soft skin of her neck, sending a jolt of electricity straight down her spine. The air between them grew thick, charged with an undeniable, magnetic pull that had been building since the night of the dinner party.

Before the moment could escalate, a loud, sharp crash echoed from the hallway outside the sunroom.

Nathaniel’s romantic demeanor vanished instantly. The apex predator returned in a fraction of a second. He spun around, placing himself firmly between the door and Lily, his hand instinctively moving toward the concealed weapon inside his jacket.

"Marcus!" Nathaniel barked, his voice echoing off the glass walls.

The heavy doors burst open, and the head of security rushed into the room. Marcus looked uncharacteristically frantic, his suit rumpled, holding a ringing, encrypted phone in his hand.

"Boss," Marcus panted, his eyes darting toward Lily and Sophie before locking onto Nathaniel. "We have a massive situation."

"Speak," Nathaniel commanded, his posture rigid, preparing for an assault.

"It’s not an attack," Marcus said quickly, holding up the phone. "It's the Commission. They just called an emergency tribunal in Chicago. They are demanding your immediate presence."

Nathaniel’s jaw clenched so hard the muscles ticked visibly. The Commission rarely called emergency tribunals unless a syndicate head was facing a vote of no confidence—or a declaration of total war.

"Why?" Nathaniel demanded coldly.

"It's Vivienne," Marcus explained grimly. "She didn't run. She went directly to Don Moretti. She told them everything about our port operations, and she told them you are harboring a federal fugitive in your home."

Lily’s blood ran completely cold. The secret she had brought into the house was about to drag the entire Cross empire into a bloodbath.
