Chapter 8

The vehicle was hidden inside the west garage.

Two men inside.

Both wearing Romano maintenance jackets.

Neither Romano.

Vittorio’s guards took them without gunfire.

One refused to speak.

The other looked at Caleb.

That was enough.

Vittorio asked:

“Who gave the order early?”

The man stared at the floor.

Caleb said:

“Don’t answer.”

Vittorio almost smiled.

Good.

Now he knew the question mattered.

The hired man eventually said:

“Woman.”

Bianca’s face changed.

Marcus turned.

“What?”

The man continued.

“She called twenty minutes ago.”

Vittorio looked at Bianca.

She shouted:

“No.”

The man pointed.

“Her.”

Silence.

Bianca stood.

“I changed the plan.”

Caleb’s face hardened.

“You what?”

She turned on him.

“You were going to take Lucy.”

Caleb laughed.

“That was always the plan.”

“You said move her after the attack.”

“Yes.”

“You never said men would come into the house.”

Caleb stared.

Bianca’s voice sharpened.

“I called them early so I could control it.”

Vittorio watched.

Even now, she framed a kidnapping as control.

“Why?”

Bianca looked at Lucy’s staircase.

“She’s mine too.”

Vittorio’s expression hardened.

“No.”

That hit.

Bianca turned.

“I raised her.”

“You abused her.”

“She needed structure.”

“She needed breakfast.”

Bianca’s eyes filled with fury.

“You always take her side.”

Vittorio stared.

“She is three.”

“That doesn’t make her right.”

Silence.

Bianca continued.

“She watches me.”

“She tells Emma everything.”

“She cries to you and suddenly every rule disappears.”

Then:

“I was trying to become her mother.”

Vittorio said:

“You were trying to make her afraid to speak.”

Her face changed.

Exactly.

Emma’s seventeen videos had shown the pattern.

Dog bowl.

Withheld food.

Dragged cardigan.

Threats.

But why such focus on speech?

Vittorio asked:

“What did she hear besides the map?”

Bianca looked away.

There.

“Bianca.”

Nothing.

Emma came down the stairs.

Lucy not with her.

Safe upstairs.

Emma held the phone.

“She heard something before the red map.”

Vittorio turned.

“What?”

Emma opened an audio clip.

Lucy’s tiny voice.

Recorded one week earlier.

“Uncle Marcus says Mr. Caleb needs Daddy mad enough to say yes.”

Then another voice.

Bianca.

“Stop repeating things.”

Lucy:

“What yes?”

A slap sound.

Emma’s breathing on the recording.

Then Bianca:

“Children who listen at doors eat on the floor.”

Vittorio stopped the audio.

His face went cold.

The dog bowl had not started as random cruelty.

It had been punishment for overhearing the conspiracy.

Bianca had deliberately trained Lucy to associate speaking with humiliation.

Then Emma said:

“There’s one more thing Lucy told me.”

Vittorio looked at her.

“She said Caleb wasn’t the man Marcus was most afraid of.”

Caleb’s face changed.

Tiny.

But real.

Vittorio saw.

“Who was?”

Emma swallowed.

“Someone Marcus called Uncle Silas.”

The room went silent.

Vittorio’s father had a brother.

May you like

Silas Romano.

Declared dead twelve years ago.
