Chapter 12

The blue room was real.
Vittorio found it because Lucy had drawn it once.
Emma remembered.
A blue square.
Three windows.
A black bird.
Everyone thought it was a child’s drawing.
It matched an abandoned gardener’s cottage beyond the north greenhouse.
Painted blue twenty years ago.
Now gray.
Vittorio went with Thomas.
Inside—
dust.
Old tools.
One locked interior room.
Blue paint still visible beneath peeling wallpaper.
On the wall—
a black iron raven.
Romano symbol from Vittorio’s mother’s branch.
His late wife, Elena, had used this cottage privately before her death.
Vittorio’s throat tightened.
Lucy remembered more than he knew.
They opened the inner cabinet.
No money.
No weapons.
A small recorder.
A family photograph.
And a silver key.
Vittorio pressed play.
Elena’s voice filled the room.
“If Vittorio ever hears this, then Silas came back.”
Thomas looked at him.
Vittorio went still.
Elena continued.
“I saw him once.”
“Three months before I died.”
Not murder.
Elena had died from a sudden aneurysm.
Natural.
But she had known.
“He asked about the south route.”
“He said Vittorio was ruining the Romano name.”
Vittorio’s jaw tightened.
“He wanted me to convince you fatherhood was making you weak.”
Pause.
“I told him fatherhood was the first thing making you careful.”
Vittorio closed his eyes.
Elena continued.
“He laughed.”
“Said one day Lucy would become the easiest way to move you.”
Thomas whispered a curse.
The plan had existed for years.
Elena:
“So I moved something first.”
Vittorio looked at the silver key.
“The south-route master lock is no longer where Silas thinks.”
Vittorio stared.
His wife had altered access.
“Lucy knows the blue room because I brought her here once.”
“She was too young to understand.”
“But children remember color.”
Silas had heard Lucy mention it somehow.
Maybe Bianca.
Maybe staff.
Maybe Paul.
And assumed the blue room held the key.
Elena continued.
“The silver key opens nothing by itself.”
“It only matters with the black raven.”
Vittorio looked at the iron bird on the wall.
He removed it.
Behind it—
a mechanical slot.
The silver key turned.
A panel opened.
Inside was the real south-route gate control handle.
Removed years earlier.
Without it, Silas could not truly reopen the route.
That was why he needed Lucy asking about the blue room.
The child had accidentally revealed the missing piece.
Vittorio almost laughed.
Silas thought he had kidnapped leverage.
In reality, Lucy had led Vittorio to the one object Silas still needed.
Thomas looked at him.
“What do we do?”
Vittorio picked up the control handle.
Then Elena’s recording ended with one final sentence.
“If Silas ever makes you choose between Lucy and power, choose Lucy.”
Vittorio stared at the recorder.
Then smiled faintly.
“That was never the hard part.”
Thomas looked at him.
“What is?”
Vittorio held up the handle.
“Choosing Lucy without giving Silas the war he wants.”

That would require something more dangerous than rage.
Patience.
