Chapter 8

The hidden room contained four years of proof.

Not written plans.

Habits.

Stacks of food delivered through a narrow service hatch.

Medication bottles with dates.

Clothing in Sofia’s size.

Blankets replaced each winter.

Someone had maintained her captivity carefully.

That someone was Marco.

He admitted it after I found his old cufflink beneath the bed.

“I brought supplies.”

Sofia looked at him.

“You brought threats.”

His face hardened.

“You were fed.”

I stared at him.

He realized too late how ugly that sounded.

Sofia laughed.

“There it is.”

“What?”

“The thing you told me every week.”

Marco said nothing.

Sofia looked at me.

“He used to say I should be grateful. Grateful for food. Grateful for warm water. Grateful they let me hear Clara through the wall.”

My entire body went cold.

Marco looked away.

Sofia continued.

“When I refused to tell them where the recording was, Helena reduced everything.”

“What does that mean?”

“Lights.”

My jaw tightened.

“Food.”

Silence.

“Heat.”

Marco finally spoke.

“She was never starved.”

Sofia stared.

“Not enough for you to call it starving?”

He looked away.

I understood.

Another distinction cruel people make for themselves.

Not enough harm to accept the word.

Enough harm to get obedience.

Sofia looked toward Helena.

“She would sit outside the panel sometimes.”

My sister’s face changed.

“What did she say?”

Sofia smiled without humor.

“That Clara had stopped asking for me.”

I closed my eyes.

“She told me you removed my photographs from the bedroom.”

I looked at Helena.

She shrugged.

“They upset the child.”

“No.”

Sofia’s voice sharpened.

“They upset you because she still remembered me.”

Helena stared.

Sofia continued.

“She told me one day Clara would call her Mom.”

Helena laughed.

“That never happened.”

“No.”

Sofia stepped closer.

“Because even at four years old, my daughter knew what you were.”

May you like

Helena’s smile vanished.

And for the first time, I saw Sofia stand in front of the woman who had controlled her life for four years without shrinking.
