Chapter 15

Helena lost every Caruso channel.
No council.
No private meetings.
No access to Clara.
No access to Sofia.
No inherited authority through age or blood.
Marco lost his advisory role and every crew that once answered through him.
Rusk lost his place entirely.
There was no dramatic ceremony.
No need.
Power is often simpler than people pretend.
People stop answering.
Doors stop opening.
Rooms continue without you.
Helena hated that more than anything physical I could have done.
“You cannot erase me from this family.”
I looked at her.
“No.”
She waited.
“I’m stopping you from defining it.”
Her face hardened.
She looked toward Clara.
My daughter stood beside Sofia at the far end of the hall.
Helena called her name.
Clara did not move.
Helena softened her voice.
“Sweetheart.”
Sofia stiffened.
I did too.
Clara looked at me.
I said nothing.
Her choice.
She looked back at Helena.
“You said Mommy was dead.”
Helena’s face changed.
Children do not care how complicated your justification is.
They remember the sentence.
Helena stepped closer.
“I was protecting you.”
Clara shook her head.
“You threw Bunny away.”
Silence.
Of all the crimes.
All the conspiracy.
All the years.
That was the wound Clara chose.
Her white rabbit.
Helena looked almost offended.
“You were too old for it.”
Clara moved closer to Sofia.
“No.”
One word.
Helena had no answer.
Because control always sounds weakest when the person being controlled finally realizes they can refuse it.
I watched my daughter take Sofia’s hand.
First time.
Sofia froze.
Then gently closed her fingers around Clara’s.
May you like
I looked away.
Some victories should not have a Mafia boss staring at them like property.
