Chapter 1

The cascading crystal chandeliers cast a warm golden light across the carved walnut paneling of Conrad Bellamy’s dining room, illuminating the crowded engagement dinner in a bright, airy wash of luxury. Gilded mirrors reflected the tall ivory candles glowing inside their crystal hurricane holders, interspersed between low arrangements of cream roses. Every detail of the room bespoke immense wealth and power, from the cream velvet dining chairs to the polished marble floors. The thirty assembled guests, all fair-skinned Americans with rosy complexions, spoke in hushed, polite American accents as they dined on gold-rimmed porcelain.

Conrad stood beside his chair at the head of the white damask table. He was a man of terrifying influence, a mafia boss who looked movie-star handsome. His powerful shoulders strained the fabric of his tailored dark three-piece suit. He possessed an angular face with a high-bridged nose, a sharply defined jawline shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble, and thick, slightly wavy hair swept naturally back, with just a few loose strands falling over his forehead. Refined artistic tattoos stretched across his hands and fingers, spaced generously to leave clean flesh between the ink, leading up to a small, intricate neck tattoo.

Opposite him stood his fiancée, Valentina Price. Her fair, rosy skin glowed against her sculpted plum silk evening gown. Diamond earrings flashed in the candlelight, matching the heavy engagement ring on her finger. She surveyed the room with an air of absolute ownership.

A few feet away from the head table, near a polished serving console, stood Nina Whitaker. The housemaid was beautiful, her softly oval face, delicate cheekbones, and expressive brows giving her a cinematic elegance. Her hair was arranged in a polished low bun, and her slender figure maintained a graceful posture despite the crushing weight in her chest. She wore a sophisticated black maid dress with a cinched waist, a slim fitted silhouette, a short A-line skirt, and a neatly tied white apron with stark white collars and cuffs.

Nina stepped forward and placed a heavy silver bread tray on the console. Beside her, Conrad’s three-year-old daughter, Molly, reached up. The little girl, dressed in an elegant cream party dress with a ribbon sash and tiny dress shoes, quietly took the handles of the tray, trying with all her might to carry it for the maid.

Nina steadied the tray underneath. Her eyes were moist, brimming with unshed tears, but she attempted a small, grateful smile for the child. Conrad’s cold, perceptive eyes tracked the movement. He noticed the child’s fierce determination and the tight, strained expression on the maid's beautiful face.

Looking directly into Conrad’s eyes, Valentina gave a softly amused smile.

"She's just playing waitress," Valentina said.

Her voice made the situation sound charming, a lighthearted distraction. Her eyes searched his face for agreement; only after speaking did she shift her gaze, giving Nina a brief, ice-cold warning glance to remove the child.

Nina looked directly at Conrad, who met her gaze from beside the table.

"Nina. Why is she serving?" Conrad asked.

His deep, low voice was quiet and deliberate. The measured pause in his tone was a command. Instantly, every guest stopped eating and speaking, turning toward him. The clinking of silver vanished.

Nina swallowed. Her inner brows lifted slightly, and her gently curved lips trembled before she could force the words out. Maintaining eye contact with the mafia boss, she whispered, "She wanted me to go home."

Her voice caught painfully on the word "home." She pressed her lips together afterward, desperately trying to keep her composure, her fingers curling tightly against her white apron.

Conrad reached out, his tattooed hands sliding the silver tray from Molly’s small grip onto the table beside him.

Valentina met his eyes, her polite smile becoming visibly thinner. "She can cry after dinner."

Her delivery was calm and matter-of-fact, a brutal dismissal of human grief. Conrad watched her without responding.

Molly looked up at her father, her small brows drawing together in distress. Holding Conrad’s cold gaze, Molly said in a small, earnest voice, "Her mommy died today, Daddy."

Conrad’s expression stilled completely. He deliberately angled his powerful body, placing himself between Valentina and both Nina and Molly, forming a physical barrier. He then slowly turned his eyes toward his fiancée. Valentina’s smile faded entirely under his unwavering, perceptive gaze. Behind him, Nina lowered her chin as one silent tear slipped down her rosy cheek. The guests remained frozen in dead silence, facing Conrad, waiting for the explosion.
