Chapter 8

Gareth set the phone down carefully. He didn't move for a moment, staring out the window into the dark, cold night. The Christmas Eve snow was beginning to fall, a peaceful, picturesque scene that starkly contrasted the impending bloodshed.

Sophie watched him from the armchair. She felt the heavy, suffocating weight of the world he carried on his broad shoulders. She stood up, her fitted black maid dress swishing softly, and walked over to him. She didn't hesitate; she reached out and gently touched his arm.

Gareth turned to look at her, the lethal edge in his eyes softening immediately.

"Must you go out there yourself?" Sophie asked, her voice trembling as she looked up at his handsome, dangerous face. "You have hundreds of men to fight for you. Why put yourself in the line of fire?"

"Do you believe a general inspires loyalty by hiding in a reinforced bunker while his men bleed in the snow?" Gareth asked, reaching out to gently cup her cheek with his tattooed hand. "My men need to see me on the line. They need to know I am willing to die for this house just as they are."

"I can't bear to see anyone else hurt," Sophie whispered, the tears she had fought so hard to restrain finally spilling over her delicate cheekbones. "Please, Gareth."

The use of his first name struck him profoundly. The formal boundaries between them had completely dissolved.

"You will not lose me, Sophie," Gareth vowed, his deep voice thick with raw emotion. He pulled her gently into his arms, holding her fiercely against his tailored suit. "I survived the streets, I survived the commission, and I will survive tonight. I promise you."

He kissed the top of her dark hair, a gesture of absolute devotion. When he finally pulled away, his breathing was heavy, his face set in lines of uncompromising stone.

"Lock this door the moment I leave," Gareth commanded, his tone shifting back to the authoritative boss. "Do not open it for anyone except me or Marcus. Keep my mother and son safe."

"I will," Sophie promised, wiping a tear from her eye.

Gareth walked over to a concealed wooden cabinet in the corner of the study. He opened it, revealing a personal armory. He unholstered his everyday carry weapon, checked the magazine, and slid it back. He retrieved a heavy tactical vest, strapping it over his crisp white shirt, the Kevlar contrasting sharply with his refined attire.

He picked up a suppressed submachine gun, the sling settling heavily across his broad shoulder. He looked at Sophie and his family one last time, an unspoken universe of affection passing between them in the amber light of the study.

"Stay safe," Gareth whispered.

He turned and strode out of the study. Sophie immediately threw the heavy brass deadbolt, the loud click echoing with finality. She turned back to the room, waiting for the war to begin.

The grand front doors of the Hale estate blew inward with a thunderous crash, splintering the heavy oak into a thousand jagged pieces. The frigid winter air howled into the foyer, carrying with it the chaotic, blinding flashes of muzzle fire. The Arden family had breached the threshold.

Gareth didn't hesitate. "Fire!" he roared.

The foyer erupted into a deafening, blinding storm of violence. Gareth raised his suppressed weapon, his broad shoulders absorbing the recoil with effortless, masculine control. He moved with lethal precision, dropping two heavily armed Arden enforcers before they even fully crossed the broken doorway. The cinematic, warm lighting of the chandeliers was violently interrupted by the strobe effect of automatic gunfire.

"Hold the line!" Silas screamed from behind a shattered cream marble column, laying down suppressing fire that chewed through the invading forces.

The Arden family had brought numbers, but they had severely underestimated the tactical superiority and absolute loyalty of Gareth's men. Every time a wave of attackers tried to push into the grand hall, they were met with a disciplined, devastating wall of lead.

Gareth moved from cover to cover, his tailored dark trousers stained with soot and blood, his naturally swept-back hair now dusted with plaster. He was a god of war in a bespoke suit and a tactical vest.
