Chapter 5

By stepping aside, Celia removed the physical barrier between the arched doorway and the head table. The warm, luminous light of the dining room spilled out into the hallway, illuminating the woman standing there in plain clothes.

Juliet stepped forward. She moved with quiet, trembling dignity, her worn cardigan and simple flat shoes a jarring contrast to the sea of tailored suits and satin gowns. Her fair, rosy skin was pale, but her presence was undeniable.

Celia met Everett’s stunned gaze, her expressive brows drawing together.

"Your wife," Celia said, her voice clear and absolute, shattering the dead silence of the room. "I found her chained."

A collective, silent gasp rippled through the champagne velvet chairs. The guests stared in unadulterated shock. The woman they had held a memorial for, the woman they believed had been swept away in a tragic river accident, was standing in the flesh, bathed in the golden light of the chandeliers.

Everett rose from his chair. The movement was predatory and fluid, a sudden explosion of kinetic energy contained within a perfectly tailored dark suit. His broad, powerful shoulders dominated the space as he stepped out from behind the polished walnut table. He placed his massive frame directly between Amara and both Celia and Juliet, building an impenetrable wall of dark wool and muscle.

Juliet looked past her husband's broad shoulders. She looked directly at Amara, the woman who had stolen her life. Tears gathered rapidly along Juliet’s lower eyelids, catching the bright light of the tall candles, but she refused to let them fall.

"You told me Alton died," Juliet said.

Her voice remained quiet and clear, carrying no hysteria, only a deep, wounded disbelief. The accusation hung in the air, a monstrous truth that laid bare the sheer, calculated cruelty of the woman in the satin gown. Amara had not only imprisoned her; she had emotionally tortured her with the false death of her husband.

Everett turned his head, looking briefly at Juliet. For a fraction of a second, the cold, observant wall of the mafia boss crumbled. Profound, agonizing pain softened his angular face. He saw his wife, alive, wearing clothes meant for a servant, trembling in his own home.

Then, Everett slowly shifted that terrifying gaze toward Amara.

His head followed his eyes in a slight, deliberate turn. The small neck tattoo shifted above his collar. The muscles in his sharply defined jaw tightened almost imperceptibly, setting into unyielding granite. His mouth became completely still, a terrifying void that swallowed all the warmth in the room.

He held Amara’s eyes with a cold, unwavering stare. He did not yell. He did not immediately ask a question. He simply stared at her, stripping away every layer of her satin and diamonds, exposing the rot underneath.

Every guest remained perfectly attentive and utterly motionless, terrified to even draw a breath, waiting for the execution to begin. The silence in the bright, airy room was absolute, heavy with the promise of impending violence.
