Chapter 2

The heavy silk curtains framing the tall windows seemed to absorb the sudden, suffocating tension that radiated from the little girl. The three knocks were quiet, yet they carried a strange, heavy finality that cut through the polite murmurs of the immediate surrounding tables.
Audra’s breath caught in her throat. Her delicate cheekbones drained of their natural rosy warmth, leaving her fair skin ashen. Earlier that very afternoon, Willa had confided the horrifying truth to her in the shadows of the nursery. The housemaid’s heart hammered violently against her ribs. She reached out, resting a gentle, reassuring hand on Willa’s small shoulder, trying to ground the terrified child in the present moment.
Keaton, whose cold, observant eyes missed absolutely nothing in his domain, instantly noticed the bizarre interaction. He watched the way his daughter’s fingers trembled against the wood, and he saw the profound, unadulterated terror masking the housemaid’s beautiful face.
The mafia boss did not move frantically. The absolute stillness of his muscular, masculine frame was infinitely more dangerous. He turned his head slowly. He looked past his daughter and locked his gaze directly into Audra’s expressive, horrified eyes.
"Audra. What is Willa copying?"
Keaton’s voice was deep, quiet, and incredibly deliberate. He spoke exclusively in questions, an interrogative cadence that demanded absolute truth and stripped away all defenses. The measured, chilling pause after her name sliced through the ambient chatter of the room like a straight razor.
The effect was instantaneous and absolute. Every single guest at the polished walnut tables stopped eating and speaking. Forks hovered motionless over fine porcelain. Crystal wine glasses were lowered slowly. Dozens of fair, rosy-cheeked faces turned toward the head of the room, watching the mafia boss direct his terrifying, unbroken focus onto the housemaid. The bright, luminous colors of the room suddenly felt blinding and interrogative.
Odessa, sitting in her champagne velvet chair, stiffened. The warm golden light caught the sudden, panicked pallor of her face. She immediately leaned forward, meeting Keaton’s cold gaze, forcing her lips into a faint, reassuring smile that did not quite reach her eyes.
"Just a nursery rhyme, darling," Odessa stated, her American accent dripping with condescending reassurance. "She was playing a clapping game earlier with the staff."
Her eyes frantically searched Keaton’s angular expression for a sign of agreement, silently urging him to play along and not cause a scene in front of their powerful guests. She needed him to turn away from the housemaid and ignore the child’s morbid game.

After speaking, Odessa shifted her gaze. She shot Willa a brief, venomous warning glance—a silent, terrifying command for the seven-year-old girl to keep her mouth shut and stop tapping the table.
Audra felt the heat of Odessa's glare, but she could not look away from the towering presence of the mafia boss. She held Keaton’s intense, unyielding gaze. Her heart raced like a trapped bird. She knew the extreme danger of crossing Odessa Lane, a woman who had secretly arranged a premature burial. But looking into Keaton's perceptive eyes, Audra knew she could not let a murderer walk down the aisle.
