Chapter 9

Three weeks had passed since the brutal siege on the Whitmore estate. The mansion was undergoing massive repairs; scaffolding lined the eastern wing, and the bullet holes in the grand foyer were being painstakingly patched by discreet contractors. But beneath the destruction, a profound, unbreakable peace had settled over the household. The Voss syndicate had been entirely dismantled, its territories absorbed by Elias’s forces, cementing his absolute dominance over the city.

Megan sat on the edge of the massive four-poster bed in Elias’s master suite, rocking Oliver gently in her arms. The baby was thriving, his fair skin rosy and healthy, completely unaware of the violent storm that had surrounded his first weeks of life. Rosie was curled up beside them, fast asleep after a long afternoon of playing in the snow.

Megan was no longer a maid. Her black dresses and ruffled headbands had been burned. She wore a soft, elegant cream dress that draped beautifully over her frame. She was treated with absolute reverence by the remaining staff and guards. But her heart still fluttered with nervous anticipation every time Elias walked into the room.

The heavy mahogany door clicked open, and Elias stepped inside. He had discarded his suit jacket, wearing only a dark waistcoat over a crisp white shirt, his sleeves rolled up to reveal the intricate tattoos on his forearms. He looked exhausted from hours of syndicate meetings, but his dark eyes softened the moment they landed on Megan and the children.

"He finally went down?" Elias whispered, walking over to the bed and looking at Oliver's sleeping face.

"Just now," Megan smiled softly, looking up at him. Her clear, expressive eyes shone with a deep, unwavering affection.

Elias sat on the edge of the mattress, his broad shoulders relaxing. He reached out, his tattooed fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind Megan's ear. His touch sent a warm shiver down her spine.

"I have a question for you, Megan," Elias said softly, the dangerous mafia boss completely giving way to the devoted man underneath.

"Anything," she replied, her breath catching in her throat.

Elias reached into his waistcoat pocket. When he pulled his hand out, he opened his palm to reveal a stunning, elegant diamond ring that caught the soft light of the bedside lamp. It was not a gaudy, ostentatious piece like the one Celine had worn, but a ring of profound, timeless beauty.

Megan gasped, her free hand flying to cover her mouth. "Elias..."

"You fought for my daughter. You fought for your son. You stood beside me when the world was burning down around us," Elias murmured, his dark eyes locked entirely on hers, burning with absolute sincerity. "I don't want you as my guest, Megan. I don't want you hiding in the shadows of this house."

He shifted closer, the heat of his body radiating against her.

"I want you as my wife. I want you as the mother of my children. I want you by my side, to rule this city together, forever." Elias paused, a small, genuine smile curving his angular jaw. "Will you marry me, Megan?"

Tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilled over her eyelashes. She didn't hesitate for a single second. The terrifying mafia boss had become her safest harbor.

"Yes," Megan choked out, a watery laugh escaping her lips. "Yes, Elias. I will."

Elias slid the diamond onto her finger. It fit perfectly. He leaned in, capturing her lips in a deep, passionate kiss, sealing a promise that no war or enemy could ever break. They sat in the quiet of the repaired suite, a makeshift family forged in fire and blood, finally at peace.
