Chapter 1

A crowded Christmas reception filled the Whitmore mansion’s luxurious ballroom, the air vibrating with the low, dangerous hum of the city's criminal elite. Cascading crystal chandeliers flooded the entire space with warm golden light, casting an ethereal glow over the snow falling silently outside the towering windows. Ivory candles glowed steadily in ornate brass candelabras placed meticulously beside gilded planters, polished marble tables, and carved walnut furniture. Plush burgundy velvet sofas were arranged for the ruthless men and their glittering companions. At the center of the room, a towering Christmas tree sparkled with golden lights and crimson ornaments, dominating the lavish space.
Elias Whitmore stood near the roaring fireplace, his imposing presence demanding a wide berth from the surrounding guests. He was a handsome, masculine mafia boss with broad shoulders and a sharp, angular jaw. His naturally swept-back hair and extremely short stubble gave him a rugged edge that contrasted beautifully with his tailored dark three-piece suit. A family signet ring caught the candlelight, and a luxury wristwatch peeked from his cuff. Striking artistic tattoos utilizing negative space decorated his hands and fingers, while a small, intricate artistic tattoo appeared just above his crisp collar.
Elias’s fiancée, Celine Voss, glided toward him, parting the sea of dangerous men with an aristocratic grace. She wore a stunning deep-plum satin gown that clung to her curves, and heavy diamond earrings that flashed with every movement of her head. In her arms, she held a tiny bundle.
Not far away, Megan Hollis, a beautiful, gentle maid with delicate features and clear, expressive eyes, watched the gathering. Megan wore a fitted black maid dress, white collar and cuffs, and a white ruffled maid headband. Her fair, rosy skin was pale with exhaustion. Her hair was noticeably disheveled, her white apron rumpled, and her headband sat crookedly atop her head. She was keeping a watchful eye on Elias’s three-year-old daughter, Rosie, but Megan’s own heart was a hollow, bleeding cavern of recent grief.
Celine stopped in front of Elias. She presented the newborn baby to him, supporting the infant’s head and neck securely. The child, a two-week-old boy, was wrapped securely in a cream blanket and wore a white knitted cap embroidered with a small red star. Celine looked directly at Elias with a polished, picture-perfect smile.
"Our Christmas orphan," Celine announced smoothly, ensuring the surrounding mafia bosses heard her benevolent act. "A perfect heir."
Before Elias could process the sudden presentation, a tiny, cheerful voice sliced through the heavy tension. Rosie Whitmore, with her round rosy cheeks, soft curls, and tiny dimples, bounded forward. She wore a cream velvet dress with a burgundy sash, white knitted tights, little red shoes, and a soft ribbon bow.
Rosie stopped dead in her tracks, her bright eyes locking onto the tiny white knitted cap with the red star. She pointed excitedly toward the baby, then looked back up at the trembling maid who had cared for her for the past year.
"Mommy's baby!" Rosie declared loudly, with little toddler pauses breaking up her innocent excitement. "Auntie took!"
The words hung in the air, chilling the opulent room to the bone.
Elias’s expression hardened instantly. He reached out and accepted the infant securely in both arms. The baby was terrifyingly small, but Elias held him with natural, protective strength. Every guest in the immediate vicinity fell dead silent, the hush spreading rapidly through the ballroom as they turned toward Elias.
Elias did not look at his fiancée. He looked directly at the trembling maid standing in the shadows.
"Megan," Elias said quietly, his deep voice carrying a measured, terrifying weight. "Is he yours?"
Megan’s breath caught in her throat. She stepped forward on trembling legs, her clear eyes welling with tears. Her gaze settled obsessively on the little cap she had knitted with her own hands in the dead of night, before meeting Elias’s intense eyes. She steadied a trembling breath.
"Mine," Megan whispered, her voice fragile but clear enough to echo in the silent room. "Celine told me he died."
Celine briefly avoided Megan’s accusing gaze before returning her attention to Elias. Celine lifted her chin defensively as the careful, polished smile completely faded from her lips, replaced by arrogant defiance.
"I gave him a future," Celine stated, a venomous justification for a monstrous act.

Elias moved with deliberate, terrifying calm. He stood squarely beside Megan, holding Oliver securely against his broad chest, and explicitly placed his massive body between Celine and Megan. Megan reached out, her hands shaking violently, and gently touched the little red star on Oliver’s cap. Rosie stayed close beside Megan, gripping the maid's rumpled apron.
Elias’s cold, unwavering gaze returned to Celine, his dark eyes entirely devoid of mercy.
