Chapter 7

Megan scrambled backward across the concrete floor, clutching Oliver tightly to her chest while dragging Rosie behind her. The smoke from the breached vault door burned her eyes, but she couldn't blink away the terrifying sight of Celine Voss stepping into the bunker.
Celine leveled the silver, suppressed handgun directly at Megan’s chest. The heiress looked completely deranged, her pristine hair disheveled from the battle upstairs, her fair skin smeared with soot, but her eyes held a manic, triumphant gleam.
"End of the line, maid," Celine sneered, taking a slow, menacing step closer.
"Get away from us," Megan said, her voice remarkably steady despite the terror threatening to collapse her lungs. She positioned herself firmly in the corner of the room, completely shielding both children from Celine's view.
"You ruined my life," Celine hissed. "I was going to be the queen of this city. My father and Elias were going to rule the coast. And he threw me out like garbage because you couldn't just accept that your bastard child was better off dead."
"He is not a bastard! He is my son!" Megan shot back, her clear, expressive eyes blazing with defiant anger. "You tortured me. You lied to me. You are a monster, Celine."
"Servants are objects, Megan. You are property to be used and discarded," Celine sneered, her finger tightening on the trigger. "And now, Elias is going to lose his precious property. I'm going to shoot you in the stomach, and then I'm going to take that boy to my father as a bargaining chip."
"No!" Megan shouted, a fierce, primal maternal instinct igniting in her chest.
She didn't have a weapon, but she refused to die cowering in a corner. As Celine took another arrogant step forward, raising the gun to fire, Megan noticed a heavy metal fire extinguisher mounted on the wall just inches from her hand.
Megan didn't hesitate. She grabbed the heavy metal cylinder with her free hand, ignoring the blinding flash of adrenaline, and hurled it with every ounce of strength she possessed directly at Celine.
The heavy red cylinder struck Celine squarely in the chest.
Celine screamed in shock and pain, stumbling backward. The suppressed pistol discharged wildly into the air, the bullet sparking dangerously against the concrete ceiling. She dropped the gun, clutching her bruised ribs as she fell to her knees.
Megan didn't wait for her to recover. She lunged forward, kicking the silver pistol away into the smoky hallway, far out of reach. She grabbed Celine by the lapels of her black tactical coat and shoved the heiress violently backward against the wall.
"You stupid bitch!" Celine screamed, tears of pain streaming down her face as she clawed blindly at Megan. "My men are coming! They will slaughter you!"
"I am not afraid of you anymore," Megan snarled, her fair face fierce with protective rage.
Before Megan could retreat back to the children, the sound of heavy, frantic footsteps pounded down the stone steps outside the vault.
Megan spun around, raising her fists, prepared to fight to the death to protect the children behind her. She braced herself for the Voss mercenaries.
But a massive figure broke through the smoke.

Elias vaulted into the bunker. His tailored dark suit was torn and splattered with blood—none of it his own. His swept-back hair was wild, and his dark eyes burned with a terrifying, unholy fury. He held his heavy pistol in one hand, sweeping the room until he saw the scene: Megan standing fiercely defensive, and Celine cowering against the concrete wall.
Elias didn't hesitate. He crossed the room in two massive strides, grabbing Celine by the throat and hauling her off the floor, pinning her against the wall with lethal force.
