Chapter 7

"Damian, darling, you must understand," Juliette whispered, her voice pitching slightly higher with defensive anxiety as she faced the terrifying silence of her fiancé. "She was overstepping her boundaries. A maid has no business parading around this estate trying to catch your eye."
The sheer, brazen audacity of the defense echoed off the gilded mirrors. It was a callous admission of physical torture, an arrogant attempt to gaslight the room into believing her actions were simply the harsh, necessary realities of maintaining the syndicate's hierarchy.
"You admired her hair," Juliette stated, her American accent dripping with cold, unapologetic defiance. "I fixed that."
The words hung in the bright, golden air, a staggering confession of profound insecurity and sociopathic violence. To mutilate a woman over a passing compliment was a level of instability that threatened the entire foundation of the mafia empire.
Damian’s reaction was deliberate, fueled by a cold, terrifying, protective adrenaline. He did not yell. He did not reach for a weapon. His restraint was a masterclass in terror.
He moved with absolute, predatory precision. He stepped decisively forward, inserting his broad-shouldered, masculine frame directly into the medium wide space between Juliette and Mia. He placed his body entirely between his fiancée and the trembling housemaid, creating an impenetrable physical shield of authority.
Damian turned slightly toward Mia. With immense, heartbreaking gentleness, he reached out with his tattooed hand. He carefully straightened Mia’s crooked white lace headband, smoothing down a disheveled strand of her unevenly chopped hair.
The physical touch was a public declaration. It was an absolute, undeniable claim of protection over the maid.
Three-year-old Ella, sensing the shift in the power dynamic, stayed close beside Mia. The toddler in the cream cable-knit dress reached out. Ella gently took Mia’s free, trembling hand in her own tiny fingers, offering a profound, innocent solidarity.
Feeling the solid, unyielding presence of Damian standing protectively in front of her, and the warm grip of the child's hand, the paralyzing terror that had gripped Mia all day finally broke. Her rigid, tense shoulders eased slightly.
Damian did not look back at Mia. He kept his calm, unwavering gaze returned entirely to Juliette. He watched her in absolute silence, a silence that promised catastrophic destruction.
"You mutilated a woman under my roof over a compliment," Damian stated, his voice a low, vibrating rumble that shook the crystal glasses on the nearby tables.

"I protected our future!" Juliette snapped back, her voice losing its practiced elegance. "The Shaw family and the Voss family are merging! You were distracted, Damian! I did what was necessary to remind everyone who will be the queen of this estate!"
"Does a queen command respect with sewing shears and cowardice?" Damian inquired, his perceptive eyes narrowing into cold slits.
