Chapter 4

The cinematic, golden light of the chandeliers seemed to sharpen, focusing entirely on the towering Christmas tree at the edge of the room. The air around them was thick with a dangerous, electric gravity. Mia walked with agonizing slowness, her flat shoes gliding over the polished marble floor. She held the severed braid in her right hand, the white satin ribbon contrasting sharply with the dark hair.

Juliette followed closely beside her, her deep-plum gown shimmering like a bruise under the lights. The elegantly dressed guests gathered nearby continued to mingle, completely unaware of the psychological torture occurring just a few feet away.

Mia hesitated beside the Christmas tree. The golden fairy lights and crimson ribbons blurred as tears gathered heavily along her lower eyelids. She looked at the branches, her arm feeling as heavy as lead. She could not bring herself to raise her hand. She could not bring herself to display her own mutilation as a festive ornament.

Juliette stepped closer, her shoulder brushing against Mia’s. She raised her hand, gesturing forcefully toward a prominent, eye-level branch illuminated by a cluster of fairy lights.

Juliette looked directly at Mia. Her polished smile was entirely unyielding, a mask of aristocratic cruelty.

"Hang it," Juliette whispered, her voice laced with absolute, undeniable venom. "Everyone should admire it."

Mia’s chest heaved rapidly beneath the fitted black fabric of her creased dress. Her fingers tightened around the top of the braid. She slowly began to raise her hand, her arm trembling so violently she could barely control the motion. The sheer, overwhelming humiliation threatened to break her completely.

Before Mia could loop the white satin ribbon over the evergreen branch, a small, cheerful figure stepped directly into the space between them.

Three-year-old Ella had followed them to the tree. The toddler in the cream cable-knit dress looked up at the object in Mia's hand. Her innocent, observant mind instantly processed the familiar dark hair and the white ribbon.

Ella recognized the braid. She remembered the terrifying scene in the laundry room earlier that day, though her three-year-old brain didn't fully comprehend the violence of it. She only knew what she had seen.

Ella turned her small body away from the tree. She looked directly up into the crowd, seeking the tallest, most familiar figure in the room.

Damian Voss had been walking toward the tree to check on his daughter. The mafia boss stepped perfectly into the medium wide space just as Ella tilted her head up toward him.

Ella pointed a tiny finger at the severed hair in Mia's hand, innocently recounting the familiar action to her father.

"Mommy hair," Ella announced, her voice punctuated with little, breathless toddler pauses. "Auntie snip-snip!"

The childish, clear words sliced through the ambient noise of the ballroom with the devastating force of a detonating bomb.
