Chapter 3

The clatter of crystal glasses and the low hum of affluent conversations provided a rhythmic backdrop to the Christmas Eve festivities. Mia pushed through the silk drapes, stepping back into the bright, airy light of the grand ballroom. The golden reflections offered absolutely no place to hide her disheveled appearance. She kept her head down, navigating the carved walnut furniture and burgundy velvet sofas with agonizing care. She kept Ella close by her side, the little girl proudly holding onto her apron as they approached the perimeter of the room.
From across the polished marble floor, Juliette Shaw watched the interaction. The socialite excused herself from a group of donors, her deep-plum satin gown rustling loudly as she stepped deliberately toward the shadows where Mia was attempting to hide.
Mia froze as the shadow fell over her. Her hands gripped the fabric of her rumpled apron so tightly her fingers ached. She wanted to stand up and run, but she was trapped in the luminous, crowded ballroom, surrounded by fifty dangerous guests.
Juliette stopped directly beside the young maid. The socialite maintained her polished, flawless public smile, ensuring that any watching guests saw only a benevolent future wife checking on the staff. But her eyes burned with a malicious, lethal triumph.
"You look absolutely pathetic, Mia," Juliette whispered, her voice dropping into a quiet, venomous register meant only for the terrified girl. "Your uniform is a complete disgrace to this estate."
"I am sorry, Miss Shaw," Mia choked out, refusing to meet the woman's cold emerald eyes.
"I have a special task for you," Juliette continued, her tone light and conversational, masking the brutal intent beneath her words. She reached into the folds of her satin gown and produced a horrific object.
It was Mia’s own severed braid, tied neatly at the top with a pristine white satin ribbon.
Mia’s breath hitched violently in her throat. The color drained entirely from her fair face. She stared at her own hair, a suffocating wave of terror and profound humiliation washing over her.
"Take it," Juliette commanded quietly, thrusting the ribbon-tied braid into Mia’s trembling hands.
Mia reflexively took the soft, dark hair, her stomach churning violently.

"You are going to walk over to the Christmas tree," Juliette instructed, her American accent dripping with condescending superiority. "And you are going to hang it on a branch. If you refuse, or if you run, my men will ensure you never walk out of this mansion alive."
Mia stared down at the braid. She knew the woman standing above her was a monster. She knew that doing this would completely destroy her dignity in front of the entire syndicate, but refusing a direct order from the boss's fiancée was an insult that could cost her life. She looked down at Ella, who was watching them with wide, curious eyes, and knew she had to survive for the little girl's sake.
