Chapter 1

A crowded Christmas reception filled the Whitmore mansion’s luxurious music salon, a space designed to intimidate as much as it entertained. Cascading crystal chandeliers flooded the entire room with a warm, golden light that danced across the faces of the city's most dangerous and powerful elite. Ivory candles glowed steadily in ornate brass candelabras, their flickering flames reflecting in the massive gilded mirrors that lined the walls. Beneath the polished marble floors, the heavy bass of murmured conversations rumbled. Carved walnut furniture and plush burgundy velvet sofas were arranged meticulously, offering seating for the ruthless men and their glittering companions. In the corner, a towering Christmas tree sparkled brilliantly with golden lights and heavy crimson ribbons. It was a picture of absolute perfection, masking the rot beneath the surface.

Near the grand fireplace, a polished grand piano stood like an executioner’s block. Megan Wells sat trembling on the piano bench, feeling entirely out of place and terrified. She was a beautiful, gentle maid with delicate features and clear, expressive eyes, but tonight, she looked completely shattered. Her fitted black maid dress felt suffocating, the white collar and cuffs stiff against her fair, rosy skin. Her hair was noticeably disheveled, her white apron rumpled, and her white ruffled maid headband sat crookedly atop her head. The most glaring imperfection, however, was the clean, lightweight bandages tightly wrapping both of her hands.

"I am waiting, Megan," a sharp, venomous voice hissed above the ambient noise of the party.

Sabrina Rowe, Dante Whitmore’s fiancée, stood beside the piano, a vision of aristocratic cruelty. She wore a stunning champagne satin gown that clung to her curves, and heavy ruby earrings that flashed like fresh blood with every movement of her head. Sabrina pointed a manicured finger toward the stark black and white keys of the piano.

Megan held her bandaged hands just above the keyboard, her fingers throbbing with a sickening, pulsing agony. She looked pleadingly up at the heiress, her voice trembling. "Please. My hands still hurt."

Sabrina glanced down at the lightweight bandages, a flicker of sadistic satisfaction crossing her features before she met Megan’s tear-filled gaze. Her polished, picture-perfect smile tightened into a grimace of pure contempt.

"Play," Sabrina commanded, her voice dropping to a lethal, quiet register so the nearby mafia bosses wouldn't hear. "Forget that dead woman’s song. You are here to entertain my guests, not play mother to a child that isn't yours."

"I can't press the keys, Miss Rowe," Megan whispered desperately, tears threatening to spill. "The swelling—"

"If you do not play this instant, I will have my father's men take you down to the cellar and make sure you never use your hands again," Sabrina threatened, stepping closer. "Now, play the damn carol."

Megan squeezed her eyes shut, a tear slipping down her cheek. She braced herself for the excruciating pain, slowly lowering her bruised, bandaged fingers toward the cold ivory keys. She knew nobody in this room of monsters would save a simple maid. She had crossed a line earlier that day, and now she was paying the ultimate price.
