Chapter 10

The sterile, concrete walls of the holding cell absorbed the sound of Cordelia’s panicked weeping, offering no comfort and no escape. Alaric stared down at the broken woman, his cold, perceptive eyes devoid of any lingering affection or mercy. The engagement had been a calculated business move, but her cruelty toward Seth had made it a blood feud.

"Will you ensure she is transported to the council's high-security facility tonight, Marcus?" Alaric asked, turning his head slightly to address his underboss.

"Yes, Boss," Marcus nodded grimly. "The commission is already expecting her. They aren't happy about Victor's little war, and they want to make an example out of her."

"Do you think they will show her the same mercy she showed a freezing child?" Alaric inquired, his voice dripping with lethal sarcasm.

"No, sir. Not a chance," Marcus grunted, stepping forward to pull Cordelia to her feet.

"No! Alaric, please!" Cordelia screamed, thrashing against Marcus's iron grip. "I'll do anything! You can't just throw me away!"

"Have you not already thrown yourself away, Cordelia?" Alaric asked, turning his broad shoulders and offering his arm to Eliza. "Shall we leave this garbage to rot?"

They walked out of the cell, the heavy steel door slamming shut, cutting off Cordelia's hysterical screams entirely. As they ascended the concrete stairs, leaving the subterranean darkness behind, the heavy weight of the past twenty-four hours finally seemed to lift from Alaric's shoulders.

They emerged back into the grand foyer, where the morning sun was now streaming through the shattered windows, casting bright, hopeful light across the marble floor.

"Are you alright, Eliza?" Alaric asked, stopping at the base of the grand staircase.

"I am," Eliza said softly, looking up into his handsome, angular face. "It feels surreal. Just yesterday I was serving dinner, and now... the entire world has changed."

"Do you regret the choice you made when you opened that freezer door?" Alaric asked, his deep voice carrying a quiet, profound reverence.

"Never," Eliza answered instantly, her expressive brows drawing together in absolute certainty. "I would do it a thousand times over to keep him safe."

"Do you understand the danger that will always follow this family?" Alaric inquired, his hands gently resting on her waist. "Will you be able to sleep at night knowing the violence that surrounds me?"

"I know the violence," Eliza whispered, resting her hands against his chest, feeling the steady, powerful beat of his heart. "But I also know the man who commands it. I am not afraid."

Alaric’s cold eyes softened completely, filled with a deep, consuming devotion that he had never allowed himself to feel before. He had built an empire of fear, but in Eliza, he had found a sanctuary of unparalleled bravery.

"Will you stand by my side and help me rebuild this empire into something my son can be proud of?" Alaric asked, his face inches from hers.

"I will," Eliza promised.

Before he could kiss her again, a small, sleepy voice echoed from the top of the grand staircase.

"Papa?"

Alaric and Eliza looked up. Seth was standing on the landing, wearing his thick cotton pajamas, rubbing his eyes. He looked down at them, a small, hesitant smile touching his lips when he saw Eliza standing so closely to his father.

"Did you have a good sleep, Seth?" Alaric asked, his voice returning to a warm, gentle rumble.

"Yes, Papa," Seth said, walking slowly down the stairs. He reached the bottom and immediately grabbed Eliza's hand, looking up at her with profound trust. "Are you going to stay with us, Eliza?"

Alaric looked at the beautiful woman holding his son's hand, his heart finally full after years of calculated emptiness.

"Shall we go have breakfast and talk about the future?" Alaric asked, smiling as he led his new family toward the kitchen.
