Chapter 1

The cascading crystal chandeliers cast a warm, decadent golden light across the gilded ceiling moldings and ivory-paneled walls of the Harrow estate. It was an evening designed to project absolute, impenetrable power. The grand dining room was a theater of wealth, where tall candles glowed fiercely in heavy silver candelabras, their flames dancing among arrangements of pristine white roses, crystal stemware, and fine porcelain. Polished walnut tables stretched across the expanse, flanked by champagne velvet chairs occupied by the city’s most dangerous men and their adorned wives. The air was thick with the scent of roasted meats, expensive perfumes, and the sharp, metallic undercurrent of mafia politics.
At the center of the head table sat Damon Harrow. He possessed a presence that devoured the oxygen in any room he entered. Handsome like a movie star, his broad, powerful shoulders filled out a tailored dark three-piece suit with lethal perfection. His angular face, dominated by prominent cheekbones and a high-bridged nose, was framed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble along a sharply defined jaw. His thick, slightly wavy hair was swept back, though a few loose strands fell carelessly across his forehead. He remained quiet, his cold, perceptive eyes missing nothing. The refined, generously spaced artistic tattoos across his hands and fingers caught the light as he occasionally adjusted his wristwatch or turned his family signet ring.
"The waterfront properties will be fully secured by next month," a capo seated to his left murmured, leaning in respectfully. "Are we proceeding with the Voss family alliance to handle the freight?"
"Have I ever halted an operation prematurely?" Damon asked, his deep, low voice vibrating through the crystal on the table. It was not a request for an answer, but a statement of absolute authority wrapped in his signature, questioning cadence.
Opposite the capo stood Coralie Voss, Damon’s newly minted fiancée. She was a vision of sculpted midnight-blue satin, her gown catching the golden light like a dark ocean wave. Diamond earrings flashed at her neck, competing with the heavy engagement ring on her finger.
"It will be a beautiful partnership," Coralie said, her voice smooth and melodic, offering the capo a carefully sympathetic public expression. "Our families have endured so much tragedy recently. It is time we build something enduring."

Beside Damon sat his seven-year-old son, Eli. The boy was dressed impeccably in a cream shirt, a dark waistcoat, and polished shoes. Yet, the child looked entirely hollow. Since the sudden, brutal death of his mother six months ago in a fatal fall, Eli had become a ghost in his own home. He stared blankly at his untouched porcelain plate.
Moving silently through the periphery of the room was Sylvie Hart. Beautiful like a movie star, her softly heart-shaped face and delicate features were framed by dark hair arranged in an elegant, braided low bun. Her slender figure and graceful posture were highlighted by a sophisticated black maid dress with a cinched waist, fitted silhouette, and a short A-line skirt. Her neatly tied white apron, collar, and cuffs were immaculate. She was the only person in the house who knew the true depth of the little boy's silence.
