Chapter 3

The heavy silence in the grand dining room was a physical, suffocating pressure. The tall candles flickering inside their silver candelabras seemed to be the only things moving. The bright, luminous colors of the room felt painfully sharp, illuminating the exact moment the polished illusion of the Ashcroft empire began to violently fracture.

Sienna gripped the edge of the polished walnut table, her diamond engagement ring catching the light as her hand shook. She opened her mouth to speak, to scream a denial, to call the housemaid a liar, but her vocal cords were paralyzed by the sheer, overwhelming terror radiating from the man standing opposite her.

Desmond stared at his fiancée. The generous spacing of the refined artistic tattoos across his hands flexed as he rested his knuckles on the table.

“Are you finding it difficult to offer an explanation, Sienna?” Desmond asked.

His deep, low voice remained completely level. The deliberate pause between his words was a calculated instrument of psychological torture. He did not step toward her, but the sheer gravity of his masculine presence pressed her against the champagne velvet chair.

“Desmond, darling, please,” Sienna finally gasped, her voice pitching high and breathless with panic. “She is a sick woman! She is completely delusional! She heard rumors about your missing wife and internalized them! You cannot possibly believe a newly hired maid over the woman you are going to marry!”

“Would a delusional stranger know the exact, unwritten recipe of a dish my wife perfected on our honeymoon?” Desmond inquired, his cold, observant eyes narrowing into lethal slits.

“She must have read it in a journal!” Sienna cried, tears of sheer desperation welling in her eyes. She pointed a shaking, diamond-adorned finger at Elsie. “This maid is trying to sabotage us! She is trying to turn you against my family! She wants to ruin this evening!”

Elsie instinctively took a half-step back, her slender figure tense in her sophisticated black maid dress, but Desmond’s solid, unmoving presence kept her anchored.

“Would a housemaid fabricate a narrative to destroy the foundation of a mafia syndicate?” Desmond asked, his voice echoing off the carved marble fireplace.

“Yes!” Sienna shrieked, looking frantically around the room at the seated guests, silently begging someone—anyone—to intervene. But the elite crowd sat immobilized, their fair faces pale with shock, utterly unwilling to cross the mafia boss.

Desmond slowly swept his gaze across the room, taking in the fifty guests sitting frozen at their tables.

“Have you all finished your meals?” Desmond asked the room at large.

It was phrased as a question, but the command hidden within it was unmistakable and absolute. Chairs scraped violently against the polished hardwood floors as the guests practically scrambled to their feet. There were no polite farewells, no lingering handshakes. Men in tailored suits and women in evening gowns fled the bright, elegant room with frantic urgency, eager to escape the blast radius of Desmond Ashcroft’s wrath.

Within moments, the grand dining hall was entirely empty, save for Desmond, Sienna, and Elsie. The heavy mahogany doors slammed shut, sealing the room and locking Sienna inside with her greatest nightmare.

“Did you truly believe you could run a shadow prison in my own home and remain seated at my table?” Desmond asked, turning his terrifying focus entirely back to the woman in the sapphire satin gown.
