Chapter 2

The absolute silence in the dining room felt like a physical weight. The golden light from the tiered crystal chandeliers suddenly felt harsh and exposing. Cora stood frozen beside the polished walnut table, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She was acutely aware of the hundreds of eyes staring at her, but the only gaze that mattered belonged to the man sitting in front of her.
Cora maintained eye contact with Benedict. She forced herself not to look away from his cold, watchful eyes, which were now searching her softly tapered face with a terrifying, piercing intensity. Her lips parted as she took a shallow, shaking breath; moisture gathered rapidly along her lower eyelids, threatening to spill over her high cheekbones. She had practiced this moment a thousand times in her head, but the reality of speaking the truth to the most dangerous man in the city was paralyzing.
"My father," Cora answered. Her voice was fragile but incredibly clear, carrying flawlessly across the dead silent room. "Your brother."
A collective, silent gasp seemed to ripple through the velvet dining chairs. The guests stared in unadulterated shock. The late Ashford brother, the beloved ghost of the syndicate, had a child?
Before Benedict could process the magnitude of the revelation, Alessandra intervened.
Alessandra smoothly adjusted her posture, the sculpted satin of her evening gown rustling softly against the upholstery. She met Benedict’s stunned gaze with a small, reassuring smile, projecting the image of an unbothered, fiercely protective fiancée attempting to shield him from a cruel scam.
"Your brother died childless," Alessandra stated, her delivery smooth, melodic, and laced with synthetic pity.
She offered the lie with effortless perfection, but her eyes desperately searched Benedict’s angular face for any sign of agreement, any indication that he would accept her version of reality and dismiss the beautiful housemaid.
Benedict did not nod. He did not agree. He moved with the predatory, liquid grace of a man who commanded an empire. Pushing his chair back, he rose slowly to his full, imposing height, placing his broad shoulders and tailored charcoal suit directly beside Cora.
Alessandra’s reassuring smile began to tighten at the corners, hardening into a rigid, brittle line of panic as she realized he was not dismissing the girl.
Sheltered by Benedict’s towering presence, Cora found the last reserve of her courage. She looked directly across the table at Alessandra, ignoring the danger radiating from the woman in satin. Cora’s inner brows lifted with wounded disbelief, realizing the sheer, calculated cruelty of the woman who was about to marry into her family. Her fingers pressed tightly against the fabric of her white apron.
"You paid Mom to disappear," Cora said. The words emerged quietly, without an ounce of triumph or malice, merely a statement of absolute, heartbreaking fact.
The accusation hung in the warm, golden air, heavy and damning.
Benedict’s eyes remained on Cora for one long, silent beat. He absorbed the vulnerability in her posture, the undeniable truth written across her delicate features that mirrored his own brother's face so perfectly. Then, Benedict slowly shifted that terrifying gaze toward Alessandra.

His head followed his eyes in a slight, deliberate turn. The muscles in his sharply defined jaw settled into a firm, unyielding line. The brief warmth and vulnerability that had entered his eyes when he tasted the pudding vanished entirely, replaced by the freezing void of a mafia warlord.
He held Alessandra’s eyes in cold, knowing silence. He did not yell. He did not ask a question immediately. He simply stared at her, stripping away every layer of her deceit with a gaze that promised absolute ruin. Every guest remained perfectly attentive and utterly motionless, terrified to even draw a breath, waiting for the execution to begin.
