Chapter 10

The silence in the penthouse suite was heavy, thick with the unspoken complexities of a love triangle forged in trauma and survival. Aveline looked at the floor, her heart breaking, knowing that the fairy tale she had briefly stepped into was colliding with a devastating reality.

"I am just a maid, sir," Aveline whispered, her voice trembling as she retreated behind the safety of her professional title. "I did my job. I protected the family."

"Are you truly going to lie to me, Aveline?" Finnian asked, stepping forward and gently tilting her chin up so she was forced to look into his eyes. "Do you believe a maid wields a fire extinguisher against a capo out of mere professional duty?"

"It doesn't matter what I feel," Aveline said, tears finally spilling over her delicate cheekbones. "She survived hell. She loves you. You have to be there for her."

Finnian stared at her, the profound admiration he held for her selflessness warring with his own selfish desires. He knew she was right. Lara was innocent. She had been tortured because of his name, because of his cousin's greed. He owed her his life, his devotion, and his protection.

But looking at Aveline, he knew he was looking at the woman who truly understood the darkness inside him, the woman who loved the monster as much as the man.

"Will you stay in this house, Aveline?" Finnian asked, his voice dropping to a desperate, quiet plea. "Will you allow me to provide for you, to ensure you are never in danger again?"

"How can I stay and watch you with her?" Aveline asked, the heartbreak evident in her expressive eyes. "How can I serve dinner to the man I love, while he sits beside his wife?"

The question struck him like a physical blow. There was no clean answer.

"I will arrange for a substantial sum to be transferred to your account," Finnian said slowly, his voice hardening back into the measured, controlled tone of the boss. "I will purchase a secure property for you, anywhere in the country you wish to go. You will never have to wear that uniform again."

"Are you sending me away?" Aveline whispered, the tears flowing freely now.

"Am I doing it because I want to, or because I must?" Finnian asked, stepping back, putting physical distance between them before his resolve shattered completely. "If you stay, I will ruin you. I will not be able to keep my hands off you, and I will not dishonor her recovery with an affair under her own roof."

Aveline understood. The sacrifice was necessary, beautiful, and utterly devastating.

"When should I leave?" she asked softly.

"Will you give me one more day?" Finnian asked, his cold eyes filled with a quiet, pleading sorrow.

Aveline nodded, turning away and walking toward the door, her flat shoes making no sound on the thick carpet. She paused with her hand on the brass handle.

"Did you know that I would do it all again, even knowing this is how it ends?" Aveline asked, looking back at him one last time.

"Do you know that you are the only queen I will ever truly acknowledge?" Finnian replied softly.

Aveline opened the door and slipped out into the bright, airy corridor, leaving the mafia boss alone with his sleeping wife and the heavy, crushing weight of his newly reclaimed empire. The war was over, but the king had lost the only battle that truly mattered to his heart.
