Chapter 6

The bright, clinical lights of the parking garage beat down on the absolute destruction Alessandra had wrought in under thirty seconds. To her left, Ethan lay buried beneath the twisted aluminum of the canopy frames. To her right, her husband Gavin gasped weakly for air among the scattered foam cones and his son's spilled crayon drawings.

Sybil and Vanessa had backed themselves completely against the cold concrete wall. Sybil’s hands were shaking so violently that her pearl jewelry clattered audibly against her collarbone. Vanessa’s arrogant smirk was entirely gone, replaced by the pale, wide-eyed terror of a woman realizing her entire world was about to end.

Alessandra slowly rolled her shoulders, easing the tension from the explosive strikes. She didn't look at the women. She didn't look at the capos who were watching her with profound reverence.

She walked slowly, deliberately, toward the wreckage of the padded court-divider rack. Her polished heels crunched over a broken plastic toy that had spilled from Tobin's trunk. She stopped right at Gavin's feet.

Gavin groaned, trying to push himself up onto his elbows. His expensive tuxedo was covered in dust and dirt from the garage floor. His fair, rosy skin was rapidly swelling, his jaw hanging at a grotesque, unnatural angle from the sheer force of her open-handed strike. He looked up at her, tears of pain and absolute terror welling in his eyes.

Alessandra looked down at him. There was no rage left in her expression. The furious mother had been entirely consumed by the cold, calculating, and utterly ruthless Mafia boss. She looked at him as if he were a particularly disgusting stain on her pristine concrete floor.

"Alessandra... please," Gavin choked out, his voice garbled and thick with blood. He reached a trembling hand toward the hem of her tailored pantsuit. "I... I can explain."

Alessandra didn't kick his hand away. She simply took a half-step back, ensuring he couldn't touch her.

She thought about Sybil's words. Vanessa's son gets your bedroom. She thought about the cruelty required to lock a three-year-old in a freezing garage while throwing a lavish gala upstairs.

Alessandra tilted her head slightly, her dark eyes locking onto his with the gravitational pull of a black hole.

"How long have you had a child with this woman?" Alessandra asked.

Her voice was ice-cold. It didn't echo. It didn't boom. It was a quiet, lethal whisper that sliced through the humming ventilation system and pierced straight into Gavin's soul.

Gavin’s face became instantly frightened. The color drained entirely from his features, leaving him looking like a corpse. He realized in that agonizing second that his wife had deduced the entire secret in a fraction of a moment. He hadn't just been caught cheating; he had been caught trying to replace her heir with a bastard child.

"I... I..." Gavin stammered, his eyes darting frantically toward Vanessa, desperate for someone, anyone, to save him from the executioner standing over him.

But Vanessa was completely silent, pressing herself harder against the wall.

"Answer the question, Gavin," Alessandra commanded softly, the absolute finality in her tone promising immediate death if he lied. "How long?"

CUT.
