Chapter 12

Victor tried one final argument with the captains.

Ruby.

Not directly.

Legacy.

He said motherhood had changed my priorities.

He was right.

That annoyed him.

“I do prioritize her.”

The room watched me.

Victor almost smiled.

He thought I had stepped into the trap.

I continued.

“Before Ruby, I tolerated risks I shouldn’t have.”

His smile faded.

“I let old men keep positions because removing them was inconvenient. I let relatives call exploitation tradition because arguing every dinner was exhausting. I let Logan’s resentment grow because I was busy proving I didn’t need help.”

Silence.

“Motherhood changed that.”

I looked around the table.

“I now have less patience for systems that survive by making weaker people carry stronger people’s comfort.”

Raymond Cole looked at me differently.

So did Samuel.

Victor stared.

“You’re admitting emotional influence.”

“Yes.”

That shocked them more.

I continued.

“Every leader is influenced by something.”

“Fear.”

“Ego.”

“Money.”

“Legacy.”

I looked at Victor.

“You’re influenced by nostalgia.”

Then at myself.

“I’m influenced by responsibility.”

The room stayed silent.

“No one becomes objective because they’re male and old.”

Thomas Vale actually laughed once.

Victor glared.

Good.

I moved to the real question.

“Who still believes the edited footage showed I am unfit?”

Nobody raised a hand.

“Who believes destroying an infant’s crib to provoke her mother is an acceptable leadership test?”

Silence.

“Then this discussion is over.”

Victor stood.

“No.”

I looked at him.

He had finally lost control of his face.

“This family needs structure.”

“So build arguments good enough to win honestly.”

That landed.

He had none.

Dad remained silent at the head of the table.

Deliberately.

This was mine.

Victor looked at him.

“Charles.”

My father answered:

“You challenged Bianca.”

Pause.

“You lost to Bianca.”

Not me.

Not Dad.

Bianca.

That mattered.

Victor sat back down.

For the first time in my life, my uncle looked old.
