Chapter 11

The conspiracy had started before Ruby was conceived.
Thomas found that in Victor’s messages.
Two years earlier, after I removed one of his oldest allies from a shipping crew, Victor wrote:
Bianca needs a domestic counterweight.
Domestic.
As if marriage were furniture you could position against a woman.
He began courting Logan privately.
Dinners.
Advice.
Compliments.
Stories about powerful husbands who “balanced” difficult heiresses.
Logan absorbed it slowly.
Savannah entered later.
I had hired her.
That detail hurt differently.
She was excellent at her job.
Precise.
Smart.
Ambitious.
Logan began including her in meetings I skipped during late pregnancy.
Victor noticed.
Then encouraged it.
Nothing accidental.
No single mastermind controlling every kiss.
People still made choices.
But Victor built the room where bad choices became useful.
I confronted Dad.
Not angrily.
Worse.
“Did you see any of this?”
He was silent too long.
“Some.”
My chest tightened.
“What?”
“Logan resenting your role.”
“And?”
“Victor spending more time with him.”
“And?”
Dad looked away.
“I thought Logan would either grow into the marriage or leave.”
I stared.
“You gambled.”
“Yes.”
That surprised me.
No defense.
Good.
“You didn’t tell me.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I thought interfering would make you trust me less.”
I almost laughed.
“So instead you let me trust him.”
Dad accepted that.
“Yes.”
There it was.
His failure.
Not cruelty.
Pride disguised as respect.
He wanted to prove I could manage my own marriage.
Meanwhile, Victor turned that marriage into a weapon.
“I needed information.”
Dad nodded.
“I know.”
“No.”
I stepped closer.
“You know now.”
That hurt him.
Good.
He looked toward Ruby sleeping nearby.
“I failed you.”
“Yes.”
No softening.
Then he surprised me.
“I won’t ask you to forgive it quickly.”
That was better.
We sat in silence.
Two Ashfords.
Father and daughter.
No performance.
Then Dad said:
“The organization is yours if you still want it.”
I looked at him.
“Was that ever in question?”
“For Victor.”
May you like
“Not for me.”
And that was the difference the entire conspiracy had missed.
