Chapter 1

Cascading crystal chandeliers flooded the sprawling reception room with warm, golden light, casting an opulent glow over the gathered elite of the city's underworld. Tall ivory candles flickered from ornate brass candelabras, their reflections dancing across polished marble floors and gilded mirrors. Carved walnut furniture and plush burgundy velvet sofas were arranged with meticulous care, providing seating for the dangerous men and glamorous women sipping expensive champagne. At the heart of it all stood a towering Christmas tree, sparkling violently with golden lights and heavy crimson ornaments. Evergreen garlands framed the roaring fireplace, filling the air with the scent of pine and woodsmoke. Yet, for Vera Hollis, the luxury of Callan Ashford’s mansion was nothing more than a gilded cage.
Vera kept her eyes lowered, her delicate features pale beneath her fair, rosy skin. Her fitted black maid dress felt unusually suffocating tonight, the white collar and cuffs stiff against her wrists. Her white apron was already slightly rumpled from hours of endless serving, and the ruffled maid headband sat crookedly in her slightly disheveled hair. Her expressive eyes darted nervously toward the adjoining salon, where Callan, the undisputed boss of the Ashford syndicate, was holding court. She prayed he would stay there.
"You missed a spot, clumsy girl," a sharp, venomous voice hissed near the tea table.
Vera flinched, her fingers instinctively curling inward. Standing before her was Simone Drake, Callan’s fiancé. Simone was a vision of aristocratic cruelty, draped in a breathtaking emerald satin gown that clung to her curves, diamond earrings flashing with every sharp movement of her head.
"I apologize, Miss Drake. I will clean it immediately," Vera whispered, her voice trembling as she reached for the folded linen napkins resting beside a steaming porcelain teapot.
Simone’s manicured hand suddenly shot out, gripping Vera’s wrist with surprising strength. Her nails dug mercilessly into Vera’s pale skin. "An apology doesn't fix incompetence, Vera. You spilled tea on the mahogany. Do you know how much this table is worth? More than your miserable life."
"Please," Vera choked out, trying to pull back without causing a scene. "It was only a few drops. I can fix it."
"You learn nothing from soft words," Simone said, her voice dropping to a sinister purr as she picked up the porcelain teapot by its handle. Steam billowed from the spout, carrying the scent of Earl Grey and scalding heat. "Hold out your hands, Vera. Flat and steady. We wouldn't want you dropping anything else."
"Miss Drake, please, the guests—"
"Hold them out!" Simone snapped, her eyes flashing with a twisted sense of authority.
Trembling uncontrollably, Vera slowly extended her hands, her palms facing upward. Her breath hitched in her throat as Simone positioned the heavy, steaming teapot directly above her fragile skin. The ambient chatter of the party seemed to fade into a dull roar in Vera's ears. She squeezed her eyes shut, bracing for the searing agony she knew was coming, praying she wouldn't scream and ruin the Ashford reception.
"Auntie, should I get bandages again?"

The innocent, bell-like voice sliced through the tension. Vera’s eyes snapped open to see Jude Ashford, Callan’s six-year-old son, standing a few feet away. He was dressed in a soft cream Christmas sweater, his rosy cheeks flushed with the heat of the room. He looked helpfully at Simone, entirely unaware of the malicious danger unfolding before him.
Simone’s jaw tightened, but before she could answer the boy, the temperature in the room seemed to drop by ten degrees. A towering shadow fell over the tea table.
