Chapter 3

The audacity of the statement hung in the bright, vivid air of the banquet hall like the scent of spilled gasoline. The fair, rosy faces of the mafia family members were masks of pure, breathless anticipation. Everyone in the room knew Alaric Montesi’s reputation. They knew the rivers of blood he had spilled to build his empire, and they knew his absolute, uncompromising devotion to his daughter.

Bastian, blinded by his own arrogance and his mother's poisonous whispers, completely misread the terrifying stillness of his father-in-law.

"Come, Faye," Bastian said smoothly, offering his hand to the younger, pregnant woman in the elegant satin dress.

Faye took his hand, her heels clicking softly against the marble floor as they walked across the room. She kept her chin high, clearly believing that the child in her womb made her untouchable in this world of violent men. Bastian led her directly toward the head of the table, aiming straight for the overturned, ornate chair that Serena had just been violently shoved out of.

"You see, Alaric," Bastian continued, his voice echoing confidently in the silence. "This is a matter of business as much as family. My mother was right. The seat of honor belongs to the woman who secures the future of the alliance. Serena failed in her primary duty. Faye has succeeded."

Alaric gently passed Serena into the protective arms of his top lieutenant, who had stepped up quietly behind them. Alaric rolled his broad shoulders once, adjusting the fit of his tailored three-piece suit.

As Bastian and Faye approached the head of the table, Alaric stepped directly into his son-in-law’s path.

The two men stood face to face. Alaric, deeply masculine and radiating lethal intimidation, towered slightly over the younger man. The bright video colors of the room seemed to highlight the stark contrast between them: the seasoned, untouchable veteran, and the foolish, overreaching upstart.

No dialogue was spoken. The silence was absolute, a heavy, suffocating pressure that pressed against the eardrums of every guest in the room.

Bastian opened his mouth, perhaps to demand that Alaric step aside, perhaps to offer another insult disguised as business logic. He never got the chance.

Alaric’s right arm snapped forward with blinding, explosive speed. He delivered one thunderous, open-handed slap directly across Bastian’s face.

The sound was a devastating, sickening crack that echoed like a gunshot. The sheer, kinetic force of the blow was monstrous. Bastian’s head snapped violently sideways, a spray of spit and blood flying from his lips. The impact lifted him entirely off his polished leather shoes.

Bastian staggered wildly backward, his arms flailing as he completely lost his balance. He careened blindly across the carpet, crashing violently into the towering gift table set up for the baby shower.

The table collapsed under his weight. Beautifully wrapped boxes, silk ribbons, and crystal ornaments exploded into the air, raining down over Bastian as he crashed hard onto the floor in a heap of torn wrapping paper and broken pride.

Faye let out a piercing shriek, taking a terrified step backward, her hands flying up to cover her mouth. Her fair skin turned completely translucent.

Alaric did not pursue him. He simply stood in the cleared space, looking down at his hand, adjusting his heavy gold signet ring with terrifying, casual precision. The message was delivered. The illusion of Bastian's power was shattered in a single, brutal second. No dialogue was needed; the violence spoke volumes.
