Chapter 2

The effect was instantaneous and absolute. Every single guest at the polished walnut tables stopped eating and speaking. Forks hovered motionless over fine porcelain. Crystal wine glasses were lowered slowly. Dozens of fair, rosy-cheeked faces turned toward the head of the room, watching the mafia boss direct his terrifying, unbroken focus onto the kneeling housemaid.

Celestine, sitting in her champagne velvet chair, stiffened. The golden light caught the sudden pallor of her fair skin. Her manicured fingers tightened fiercely around the stem of her champagne flute. She immediately leaned forward, meeting Bennett’s cold gaze, forcing her lips into a faint, reassuring smile that did not quite reach her eyes.

"It's only caught, darling," Celestine stated, her American accent dripping with condescending reassurance.

Her eyes frantically searched Bennett’s angular expression for a sign of agreement, silently urging him to play along and not cause a scene in front of their powerful guests. She needed him to turn away from the cellar hatch.

Selma held Bennett’s intense, unyielding gaze. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She knew the extreme danger of crossing Celestine Voss, a woman whose family commanded a powerful syndicate of their own. But looking into Bennett's perceptive eyes, Selma knew she could not ignore what she had felt.

Without asking for permission, Selma leaned forward. Her sophisticated black maid dress bunched around her knees as she grasped the heavy iron ring of the cellar hatch. She pulled it upward with all her strength.

The hatch groaned open, revealing a short, dark stone staircase descending into the disused cellar.

Sitting on the uppermost step, mere inches below the dining room floor, was a man.

It was Frank Hale. Bennett's seventy-four-year-old father, who had supposedly gone missing six weeks ago during a trip to the coast.

He was dressed in a worn shirt, loose trousers, and slippers. His fair skin was pale, and he looked incredibly weak and visibly exhausted. Around his wrist, a heavy steel chain secured him to an anchor somewhere deep below the stairs. He looked up into the bright, golden light of the dining room, blinking weakly.

Selma looked directly up at Bennett, her lips trembling violently.

"Your father. He’s chained," Selma whispered, her voice cracking under the sheer weight of the revelation.

The words hit the room with the force of a detonating bomb. A collective, quiet gasp rippled through the fifty elite guests.

Bennett moved with lethal fluidity. He rose slowly from his champagne velvet chair, placing his towering, broad-shouldered frame deliberately between Celestine and Selma. His dark tailored suit acted as a massive, physical shield, cutting off the socialite's line of sight to the cellar hatch. The refined artistic tattoos across his hands flexed as he stared down at the man who had raised him.

Before Celestine could formulate a lie to explain the horrific sight, a weak, raspy voice broke the tableau.

Frank Hale looked directly at Celestine, bypassing his son's protective frame. Moisture gathered rapidly along the older man's lower eyelids, making his eyes shine brilliantly under the cascading crystal chandeliers. Despite his profound exhaustion, his voice carried a devastating, unshakeable certainty.

"You left me to die."

The words sliced through the heavy silence, exposing the absolute, monstrous cruelty of the woman in the sculpted satin gown.

Bennett froze. His entire body went rigid, the breath catching in his broad chest. His cold eyes looked briefly down at his father, the reality of the psychological and physical torture inflicted upon his bloodline cementing itself in his mind.

Slowly, terrifyingly, Bennett shifted his gaze. The movement was predatory, his eyes moving first toward Celestine, followed by a slight, deliberate turn of his head. His sharply defined jaw tightened almost imperceptibly, the extremely short stubble on his face bristling with suppressed, explosive violence.

He held Celestine’s eyes in a cold, furious stare that promised absolute destruction. The mafia boss said nothing. His silence was infinitely more dangerous than a scream, stripping away her diamonds, her satin gown, and her lies, exposing the cruel, power-hungry monster trembling beneath.
