Chapter 12

Gavin was harder than Lorraine.

My mother had history.

Fear.

Old beliefs.

Gavin had ambition.

His father had been designated to raise Evelyn if Matteo left.

If that happened, Gavin’s branch would have gained enormous influence.

A child becomes a bridge.

Same old strategy.

Matteo escaping destroyed that.

Gavin grew up hearing his father describe my brother as selfish.

Disloyal.

Weak.

Gavin inherited resentment toward a baby who escaped being used.

Twenty years later, Maisie found the memory card.

And Gavin reacted before thinking.

He saw another child threatening his branch with truth.

“You grabbed her because of Evelyn.”

He shook his head.

“I grabbed the case.”

“Attached to my daughter’s hand.”

“She wouldn’t give it.”

“She was four.”

Silence.

Then he said the worst thing.

“She should have listened.”

There.

No remorse.

Only hierarchy.

Children obey.

Adults decide.

That was why he could not remain near mine.

I removed Gavin from every Valenti role.

Every estate.

Every family gathering involving Maisie.

He laughed.

“You’re choosing a toddler over blood.”

I stared.

“She is blood.”

He stopped.

Interesting how people say family when they mean themselves.

Gavin tried once more.

“Your father would never exile a cousin over one grab.”

“No.”

I walked closer.

“He hid fifty-seven photographs because men like you were still in the room.”

That ended it.

Gavin left wealthy.

Alive.

Angry.

Without access.

No spectacle.

May you like

No beating.

The most powerful consequence in families like ours is sometimes a door that no longer opens when your name is spoken.
